Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quarq Has Arrived

I got my Quarq in the mail today but have not yet been able to pair it with the 705. I'll play with it some more later tonight...

Apparently this combo isn't yet wicked hot for the OP. He can't get it to pair.

Nice! Can it replace the spider on any FSA crankset or do you need to match it to your model?

Never mind: I see from the order page that while they will install it on existing cranks they only support a few 130 BCD models (FSA Team Issue, SRAM S900, Truvativ Rouleur CF), so in practice you buy a complete crankset with their strain gauge already on it.

I asked them about compacts in the past. This was their response:

It works now. Their support is great by the way, and I am embarassed that it was my fault overlooking a stupid setting on the Garmin. FWIW, they said it is usually set by default.

It works out to be about the same as a PowerTap or an SRM. The initial appeal was the integration with the Garmin Edge. I guess PowerTap and SRM are following as well, but the best part will be the integration with the s-works crank on my tarmac when it becomes available. For now it's on my old TCR, which will be my training bike now. Pics tomorrow, it's dark now and the inside of my house is not presentable in photos

Yeah, but the CinQo FSA spider won't fit on your S-Works crank. So you'll have to get a new S-Works CinQo as well, and have it for both. Correct?

This FSA CinQo spider won't fit on an S-Works crank.

Correct. I will need a second one. I may sell this one or I may keep both.

So does this unit eliminate the need for the Garmin cadence sensor? or is it purely just a power output sensor?

It includes cadence, so yeah, you don't need the garmin cadence sensor (which I never used)

I do on thursdays...

Interestingly, I was thinking about going out for some power testing tomorrow morning, probably around 8 or 9. I'm basically going to do 30s, 1m and 5 min testing. want to join? If so, send me an email asap.

It does eliminate the 25 gram Garmin cadence sensor, but you'll still need a 15 gram ANT front wheel speed sensor.

The Quarq will have the weight weenie advantage over other power meters, once it is available with a light crank, such as the S-Works.

The Garmin Edge 705 head unit is 105 grams.
Wheel speed sensor 15 grams.
CinQo spider (for FSA) 133 gram. Subtract stock 91 gram FSA spider = extra 42 grams.
Subtract 25 gram Garmin cadence sensor.

That is only 32 grams more than a Garmin Edge 705 equipped bike. A CinQo added to a 623 gram S-Works crank will be a sweet set up.

They don't do Shimano, unfortunately.

I wonder if they're doing OEM for Shimano (who has announce that they will be coming out with a power meter). That would be some primo validation.

Eager to hear abour your results.
