Mafac Mystery Quiz

Here's a puzzler for the vintage cycle enthusiast. What happened to the lettering on this brake caliper?

First correct answer wins nothing, but my respect for strong critical thinking.

Nope. That was an external piece that bolted on to the pivot points. There is not one here and would have no affect on the lettering if it were. Keep trying.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. Damn, I thought it would take longer.

It was actually just assembled the wrong way (arms flipped). I just thought somebody had polished the letters off as you could see it was polished at one time. But with the caliper in a relaxed state you could not see the back well enough to notice. Took me longer to figure it out! My cap is off to you.

I find it a bit curious that the straddle wire was not removed when it was flipped.

Someone let it too long in an acidic solvent of sorts to get rid of oxidation and the letters were lifted. (or it was scrubbed too hard with a an SOS pad)
