Age 70...Newbie here...3500 miles since Feb 24 2011...I have a butt proof seat.
I'm loving this sport.
I have a Giant Suede Dx bought at a hi tech bike shop. Its a comfort bike and I told the sales guy that I wanted to do a 100 mile ride before my 70th birthday... He told me I was crazy. No way someone could ride that far on a comfort bike.. It was fun watching him eat crow in May
I have the most butt friendly saddle in the world. Rode the 100 miles in my Fruit of The Looms skivies. Did not have padded shorts.
My biking buddy had a new Cannondale road bike and all the biker togs and after 70 miles all he could say was this "butt needs to get off this bike" He did finish the Centruy with me but could not ride for a week his butt was so sore. I did 30 miles the next day.
Last year for for his 70th birthday he rode across Florida in July (very hot). His route was 152 miles.. He did 100 the first day and finished it the 2nd day...
I am a slow rider. I typicaly average 12.5 - 13.5 mph on these longer rides. Part of the reason is that my bike has limits when it comes to speed (tires, riding position etc.) Going into a headwind really slows me down.
Having done my first Century ride in May, I needed a new goal for my 70th birthday in July so my buddy and I rode around Lake Okechobee in Florida in a heat index of 104. We rode a total of 125 miles in 24 hours. We did 85 miles the first day. It was like riding in an oven.
Up on the dike totaly exposed to wind and sun ..no shade anywhere. Actually it was really great. If any of you want to know more about that ride, let me know. I have some pictures and can share details if anybody is interested in doing the same ride.
Sorry don't mean to sound like I am bragging here, but I am really excited about this new hobby. I think Im doing good for my age...

Great Job, and iam glad you are having such a hoot. However with the bad weather coming my way you dont have to rub in the fact you are in paradise. And also i assume you are retired.Another thing i dont what to hear about.Really that is cool could you post some pics of your bike? I often wondered what a person could do on a comfort bike.

In November a group of us will be riding across the state from the gulf to the ocean. We start at the gulf west of Crystal River and end up later that afternoon in the ocean at New Smyrna. 128 flat miles. Interested?

Congratulations ! That's an awesome accomplishment !
Comfort bikes do have butt proof seats. They are... comfortable.
Your friend's Cannondale wasn't a CADD by any chance ? They're great bikes but the stiff alloy frame will shake you to death. If it was a carbon bike then there are any of a number of reasons why your friend wound up with a sore butt.
It really sounds like your friend needs to find the right saddle/shorts combination. Not all saddles are equal. Not by a long shot.

Way to go! Probably more of a seat proof butt than a butt proof seat.

Butt friendly seat
I have a very lean butt and every time I buy something to ride, whether it be a bike or a motorcycle, I have always had to replace the seat. I have a cruiser saddle and it will probably look very out of place on a road bike.
When me and my riding buddy, Harry, do a long ride he is complaining about his butt after about 55 miles. I always suggest that he buy a saddle like mine. His response is always..,."No way am I going to put a tractor seat on my bike. It looks stupid" My answer is always, then quit complaining and enjoy the ride. He has a new Specialized hi tech bike and I admit that my seat would look out of place on his bike but, I am not as macho as he is. I prefer comfort over looks.
The seat I use is made by Serafas and has reactive gel. The model is EX-2600 Exerciser. Here is the link. https://www.serfas.com/product_details.asp?ID=42 .
Before I got this one I had tried 2 other gel saddles but they were smaller and the gel felt really hard. I think the secret is to have lots of surface area for the gel to spread..
At the web site, there is another cruiser saddle that is even bigger, but they did not have it in stock at the bike shop. It is the CRS-1 Super Cruiser. I would have gone for that if they had it in stock. But what I have is just fine for me... Hope this helps
