Congratulations. Riding a century is more about riding until the century is done than anything else. I know a friend who I see every time I do the Safari. She rides 70 miles day after day on a hybrid. Riding that far on a flat handlebar would drive me round the bend. Heck riding 10 miles with a flat handlebar drives me round the bend. There are all sorts of ways to ride a bike.
Nice to hear of your accomplishment. Sometimes I wonder how much longer I have to do centuries. Hearing from people like you gives me hope that I still have some mileage in me. Thanks
Pat

If you look in the recumbent division, Bill Hannon is, I think, 68 or 69. The speed is out there. (I've even got a jersey that says that.) But neither of them were riding hybrids. The cool thing about Jeff Smith is that he only started riding about 3 years ago.

I had no idea that type of bike was capable of speeds like that...
The city slicker drives up to the farmer's beautiful hay field and remarks to the farmer, "God has certainly given you a beautiful field" to which the farmer replied, "Well, thank you, but, to be honest, God wasn't doing too well with it until I came along."

I have recently started riding with 5lb ankle weights on each leg.. any ideas what the result will be?

I wouldn't expect much in the way of results. After all, the two feet are mechanically connected to each other through the pedals; so when one comes up, the other goes down. The extra weight will make your workout marginally harder, but probably not enough to accomplish much. Why don't you just pedal harder?
