BB30 Bottom Bracket for a lugged steel frame question.

I have seen pics of a BB30 shell for a steel custom frame bike. I am wondering if there is a way of using a spindle with a traditional JIS taper with this type of sealed bearing bottom bracket. I would like to be able to use a vintage crankset with this technology.

Thanks,

Yes. Adapters can be purchased through bike shops. However, the "technology" advantage that the BB30 program claims to be offering is the large tubular crank spindle that you would not be using. What you would get is extra weight, flex and the darn squeak.

In my opinion, ISIS type with outboard bearings of good quality in a euro BB is the best system and is just right for modern steel.

If I understand the question correctly, you want to use a BB30 shell and sealed bearing to a JIS spindle. As I understand it this would not work. BB30 bearing are made for an over sized spindle. The adapter that FTwelder mentioned would effectively reduce the BB30 shell to a standard one, thus no benefit of the larger shell. Another thing to consider is that the BB30 design is for 2 piece cranks and 3 piece. You would need to remove the bearings to remove the spindle.

bb30 for steel makes no sense due to the weight. Putting a bb30 shell on a frame and then going with a vintage crank makes even less sense

Yes, I am convinced now. I was taken in by the Jan Heine's "Ultimate" (Rene Herse) bike in Bicycle Quarterly. From the miles I expect to ride a nice sealed Phil or SKF will do me just fine.

Thanks to all that responded

Flyweight was not much of an issue, so I got what Burly used for the rear BB on their tandems,
on my cargo grade loaded touring bike.. snap rings, oversize sealed bearings.. square taper BB..
just wish I could afford the touring ..
