Ride report: Coast the Coast
This past Saturday I was part of an eight-person team in the MS Society "Coast the Coast" ride. It starts at Long Branch on the Jersey Shore; riders can pick from 25 miles, 50 miles, 85 miles, 100 miles, or two-day 170/185 mile rides.
My niece, who has been taking MS medication for about a year now, organized the team and picked the distance: 25 miles. We were joined by her wife; her brother-in-law; various co-workers; and my husband, Phil. All together, team "Bike Me!" raised over $4000 for the MS Society.
The day was clear and sunny with temps in the low 70s. The ride was as flat as you could want -- which was a good thing, because one of the riders was on a single-speed heavy vintage beach cruiser. I kept my gearing in the highest gear in sympathy. The rider with the beach cruiser also brought an iPod and mini speakers, so yes, we did listen to "Born To Run" while rolling through Asbury Park on two wheels.
With some of my teammates, about to set off:
A rare photo of Phil:
Yes, the new bike is lighter!
And now that she's done 25 miles, my niece is thinking about going for the 50 next year. Woot!
