WTB: Old stoker stem 27.2 seat / 26.0 bar
Do you have any parts from an old (say, from 10 to 25 years ago) tandem laying around?
I'm looking for a stoker stem, seat tube diameter 27.2mm and handlebar clamp diameter 26.0mm.
Surely there are no adjustable stoker stems in this category, so a fixed stem is OK.
I'm just trying to accumulate some parts in my drawer so that fitting on-the-fly would be possible, if I need to swap out different stem length quickly.

I think I might have seen something matching that description at the shop that I work at, it's even an adjustable model. I'll try to remember to check when I'm back in on Friday.

I'll measure it and post a picture tomorrow. It's actually such a nice polished aluminum piece that I enjoy just looking at it, but I'd rather see it doing what it was designed to do on someone's bike!

Wow, I didn't know that such a stoker stem existed.
I wonder who made it?
Been searching online for something like this but barely anything, only hit was a long-ago eBay auction for a Nitto stoker stem that was adjustable.

The stoker stem from our 1999 Cannondale RT1000 has a 26.0mm handlebar clamp and with the shim that comes with it, it fits the 27.2mm captain's seat post. The shim is scraped from use, but I think that it has a 28.6mm outer diameter.
The stem is a really nice looking polished aluminum piece. It adjusts from 150mm to 180mm center to center. It is in very good condition, with just a small scratch on the bottom side of the handlebar clamp and an even smaller scratch on the right side near the seat post clamp. I don't think either would be visible while riding.
Here are some pictures.

Unfortunately I'm trying to avoid shims, I think it's an ugly hack.

I understand your aversion for shims. However, I do want to point out that in the picture the stoker stem has the shim inserted. It's almost invisible.

Better late than never. I finally remembered to look in the drawer and measure that stoker stem that we have. It's for a 27.2 mm seatpost, 26.0 mm bar. 35 degrees rise. Length adjustable from 14 to 18 cm. Let me know if you still need it.

Mel at Tandems East advertises that he has the largest selection of stoker stems anywhere. As a matter of fact, if you already have an adjustable stoker stem, he sells just the insert in varying lengths and h'bar diameters. Makes it even easier to accomplish the task you describe.

Heck, we had adjustable stoker stems on our tandems since the late 1970s!

Yeah we use that hack and it is not ugly thanks to my hacksaw!
Seriously, we use a shim on a 27.2. Seat post to allow the use of normal stems made for 1.125" steerer instead of a stoker stem. They are lighter and there is a great selection if you can decide on a fixed length.

I switched our stoker stem to a fixed length, and the stoker didn't even notice to start with. SJS Cycles in the UK have several extra long models, a 165 mm, 35 degree rise suited our setup, but they have lengths up to 180 mm.

Once you would have confirmed that the shim and the stem together fit properly, then just take a scribe or a fine permanent black marker and trace around the stem. Take it apart and grind or cut away the unneed part of the shim and the polish up the new edge. This will make it disappear even better than one with a cut fit lip on it.
