Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Everyone please Read!

I was out riding my bike and started thinking about the forums. People tend to *****(Rightly so, seven threads in 10 minutes is a few too many ) at new people who ask questions you've heard before. I think it would save a lot of time if we made a sticky with all of the basic "N()()B" questions. Clipless vs Toestraps. Drops Vs Bullhorns. Brakes Vs Brakeless. Bags, hats, hubs, tires, grip choice, all that fun stuff.

If no one wants to do it I'd be willing to write an outline for the newbies. I could post it and people could make suggestions. It would make every ones life simpler and less stressful. Then if someone need an answer to a unique question then they could post it and no one would be upset.

So basically if someone asked a question about one of those things we could all just ignore it and move on.

I reread this and was reminded of communism a bit. Great Idea in theory, works like **** in reality. I think this is worth discussing and would appreciate some feedback on the idea. If you think this idea is dumb, I would love to hear why. Reasons such as "Your mom" and "Because" do not count...

Or noobs (like me and you) could use the "search" feature on many forums, such as this one and find countless threads about the topic in question.

Just a thought.

The search thing is a valid point, however I think it would be easier to just have a sticky. IMO

pistaboy, you seem like a real smart kid. can you post a photo of you and your bike? alot of us need to confirm your physical reality. there has been an ongoing debate here as to the veracity of your
existence. so, please can you find a photo to post in here?

and yes i agree; a noob sticky is a great idea. it would really bring the SS/FG forums realistically into 2006. it would also provide a one stop shop for all of our flaming /trolling needs...

And honestly, a sticky is a great idea as many people are too lazy to use the search function. If pistaboy wants to do it, I say go for it.

well, let me just say, we'll trust you, just to get the damn thing over with. and your photo would contain
one 2005 chrome pista and one chrome bag and one pistaboy.

oh and make it a good one because it's going to be turned into a spokecard and you'll have achieved immortality at 14!

Alright. I'll draft one tomorrow in study hall. I would like it if you all would list every thread you never want to see again. Anyone who want to contribute to it sent an e-mail my way. Hopefully I'll post a rough draft by tomorrow night.

communinism isn't just a theory, it can work, only in a perfectly communistic society, i think that's what people tend to miss, there has never been a pure communistic society, either there are greedy people somewhere or there are outside influences(what's on the other side of that wall?), my point is don't blame communism for your weak idea

hundreds of thousands of people just "disappeared" from the GDR between 1945 and 1989. Show trials, forced work camps, nasty prisons, executions...what WAS on the otherside of the wall was freedom and sanity.

I'm not blaming communism at all. What I meant was that greedy people **** it over and turn it into a dictatorship. All the emo punkers at my school sport anarchy symbols over everything they own(either that or the rasta colors), cuz they think anarchy is where its at. I think communism is where its at IF its is, as you say, perfectly communistic.

I would also appreciate it if you would read what I said. It "REMINDS ME A BIT", not this is a weak idea, so lets blame it on a form of government. Troll.

aha! I've always wondered if there was a bike related wiki. I'm glad you mentioned it.

Sheldon Brown's site feels like a wiki with all the internal links to the dictionary. I emailed him once about converting it to one, but he, understandably, declined. It is, afterall, his baby. Still, I think there is room for a fixie wiki (heh, it rhymes). I really enjoy wiki's. I think they're a great way of organizing material. They're flat, as opposed to hierarchical, and most are editable by the public (pistaboy will get his communism).

I think there should be a 'resources' sticky. It should have links to the wiki, links to pistaboy's outline, links to sheldon, and posts about pie. I know this duplicates the functionality of google somewhat (i.e. if i had typed 'fixed gear wiki' into google months ago, i wouldn't sounds so silly right now), but its nice to be able to find information in multiple ways.
