Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Why is it that car drivers assume bikers have no drivers license? I took drivers ed in high school long ago and passed all appropriate driving certifications and am licensed to drive on the road. I just choose to "drive" a bike.

The lady, this morning, who yelled "red light" at me did not understand that the twenty feet between us was more than sufficient room to get through safely (I had seen her crossing before she knew I was coming and positioned myself to avoid any collision) and that my running the red got me another block ahead of the cars that would eventually accellerate to 40mph (in a 30) and overtake me.
While I agree with the sentiment behind what you wrote, I do think it's a bit off for someone to complain about the selective enforcement of laws while advocating for the selective disobeyence of laws.

so quick to insult. y u thro h8?

sterile because i obey traffic laws, or because i am prepared to accept the consequences of my actions when i don't, or because every third post of mine isn't compaining about how some motorist cut me off or some cop hassled me for going the wrong way down a one-way? those are small things, not worth even getting riled over anymore. life is too short to sweat the small stuff.

*Note - I'm not against people from Annapolis. I am against people from Annapolis writing to the New York times about bike riders.
i am from annapolis.
when i went back in may i noticed a new bike shop near my parents house and popped in to take a peek.
after browsing around a bit i was walking past the counter and perchanced to overhear a conversation between a clerk and some customers. apparently annapolis' first critical mass is scheduled to take place this august. the customers weren't familiar with the idea of CM so the clerk briefly described what it was about (leaderless, environmental awareness, cyclists rights, etc.) and what the route would probably be like..then he said something that blew my mind..something to the effect of 'loading up squirtguns with motor oil and shooting them into open car windows'. i had to jump in at that point and explain to him that NO, violence does not belong on CM, and moreover it is an incredibly stupid and cruel thing to do. he didn't seem phased by this so i went on to explain to him what the NYPD was done to CM in NYC. still this didn't seem to register, nor was he willing to discuss it any further, so i left.
i don't ride in CM anymore, but if i could make it to annapolis in time for that ride i would do it..
too bad i'll be in the arizona desert, forty miles from the nearest town..
what will become of 'nap town?
oh, the bike shop is called 'capital bicycles' and its on chinquapin round rd.

sorry for the rant.

Just because I feel like the authorities are required to do their best to work towards laws that make sense and are intended to protect people, always try and act withing the law, and respect our constitution doesn't mean that I shouldn't exercise civil disobedience when I feel the laws are created poorly and enforcement is in violation of our basic rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which happens to be directly tied to how safe I am. In fact, since the laws are unjust, and my following them is worse off for my personal safety, I am bound to do what I can to resist the enforcement of these laws as non-violently as I can. I intend to do what I can to resist this and work towards to betterment of the situation, but in the meantime, I will not obey these asinine rules, nor will I sit by passively while laws which hurt my personal safety and insult my basic beliefs are enforced illegaly.
