Montreal Fixed / Ss
Hey all...anyone out there from MTL? If so, can you tell me any good bike shops/hangouts/bars/etc where i might be able to meet up with other fixie freaks? Plug me in yo....

I was just up there last week, I saw 2 Langsters one guy was coasting and the other one was chained up and was fixed. Other than that all I kept seeing were lots and lots of mountain bikes.

I rode to Montreal (from Toronto) about 6 weeks ago as part of a charity event.. I couldn't believe the number of hardcore roadie scum I saw there. 
(I did the ride on my road bike however, so I guess I was scum too) I was there on a weekend though, so I didn't see how much messenger action there was. I happened to get in on the friday evening of July critical mass and saw it go by and surprisingly it was considerably smaller than the ones here in Toronto. I don't know why, but I expected something bigger from MTL. I'll pass along the url for this thread to a friend here who used to work as a messenger there...

yes, MTL is indeed a great city. Now I want to go back again. Next time I go I'm definitely doing a bunch of riding. No better way to see a city!

If the messenger hangout is the same as when i rode there then PVM (place ville marie University between Rene Leveque and St Catherine) is the place to go to hook into the messers scene, or just ask. As for bars, it's been way too long so I haven't the foggiest. Bike culture is alive and well in MTL, I was just there this week and loads of folks riding around.... some nice fixies too. With the mountain in the middle of the city and the real mountains north and south city,the terrible roads and real snow in the winter, MTBs just make sense. Bromont in the south was the venue for the MTB World's so there are some killer trails for that.

I went to Montreal for the first time a few years ago for the NACCC, totally fell in love with it. I visited every bike shop in the DT area, seems like maybe the one on Cherry? could help you with a fixed gear, they were a small shop but seemed to have all the expertise they would need.
I can't really remember what I liked best about it, the restaurants, the riding, the scenery, the clubs, all a blur now, one vague memory of a really good time. You can buy beer at the corner stores there, I remember that

either way, i see you're from vermont, so you'll probably be back... (i see a lot of vermont and new hampshire plates up here).
a good fixed gear type shop i just discovered is Revolution at 1757 amherst. they build bikes, some fixie conversions and such, and ride fixed gears themselves.
there's another down on Murray street between Ottawa and Wellington. I think it's called Velomakak? Yeah, here it is... 215 Murray. it's a pretty ridiculous shop. about 10,000 old bikes in an industrial garage.
another build-up and classic bikes type place is on Villeneuve between St. Urbain and Clark. It's up on the Plateau. Cool area to chill. Go from there up to Laurier and enjoy Dieu du Ciel, a really good brewpub.
cycle technique at 2717 Notre-Dame ouest has like... shiny road bikes.... if you're into that sort of thing.
i think a lot of the messengers hang out at a bar called foof (that's phoenetic spelling. it could be foufe or something completely different for all i know). i don't really know it. I believe it's on St. Catherine west of Berri street. I met some guys who go there, but I haven't been myself.
I just started messengering here a few weeks ago. It's a good crowd... you probably will see a lot of messengers, myself included, if you hang out around Place Ville Marie, like Traffic Jammer mentioned.
or walk up the west side of st. laurent on a friday night and you're bound to see a fixed gear parked outside a bar along that strip.
should have been up the weekend before last. we had a crazy alleycat. lots of fun and drinking on mount royal ensued.

In the last couple of years Montreal's really caught up on the fixed and singlespeed bikes, and I'm surprised it's taken this long for a place like Revolution to open up. Been meaning to hit it.
Not much to add, but yeah, at least 5 years ago Foufounes Electriques (at about 87 Ste-Catherine East) was the couriers spot - punk rock plus the cheapest happy hour in the city. I was there a couple of weeks ago and saw lots of ss and fixed road bikes out front.
They by no mean specialize in them, but ABC on Parc Ave has had Miche cogs, carriers and lockrings in stock, and they're able to order anything Miche or Campy from Marinoni in just a few days. Pierre-Luc has also built up three sets of fixed wheels for me on my own parts (well, and and one of their rims) and they've yet to go out of true even once under a 225 pound 4 season rider.
Also, I noticed that Yeti on St-Laurent now carries Surly frames and Pistas (I nagged them for years on the latter, and now that they have them I've built up my own bikes... sigh) so I'm willing to bet they carry hubs and chain tensioners to go with them.

You more or less can't leave your house any night of the week without running into some kind of noise/avant-garde jazz/&c show. It is impossible to book a decent punk show downtown anymore since every bar is booked every night with noise or metal bands.
As for Fouf's, I think that place is frequented more by CEGEP kids and "le hotties" than messengers. You won't see me out on my fixie this week (I got hit pretty good by a turning car on Friday), but my friends and I usually hang out at this punk pub called Yer Mad. They have the best hard cider on tap and a variety of "mixed drinks" that can be made with the ciders. I would also recommend Les Minots up on the main for pastis traditionel, though it is mostly just old french dudes who hang out there.

There are a few places and events where you can find fixie riders here in Montreal. One would be Café Cagibi. It's located on the corner of St-Laurent and St-Viateur. Another place would be the foufounes électriques. It's a bar where a lot of CEGEP, university and other types of students hang out for a good drink and good fun. There are Thursday night rides where a bunch of people (including myself) meet up for some good ol' fun. We meet up at Phillip's Square on the corner of Union and Ste-Catherine (in front of the Bay) at 8:30 PM and we ride out at 9:00 PM. We never know where we're going until we leave.
There are also a few bike shops you can swing by to get some extra info on the scene and the events to come. One of them is the Belleville Bike Co-op and another is Revolutions. Revolutions is located on Amherts above Maisonneuve and Belleville is located at 1000 St-Antoine West in the basement. I still have lots of information to give out so if you need any just hollar!

looking for a new track bike, and people have brought up Marinoni a couple of times. I am coming to MTL sat morning, what shops should i see to find these bikes? their site lists Cycles Regis, Vel'Aube, Marseille Bicycle, and Cycles et Sports Patrick. any of these places cool?
