I rode to Montreal (from Toronto) about 6 weeks ago as part of a charity event.. I couldn't believe the number of hardcore roadie scum I saw there. (I did the ride on my road bike however, so I guess I was scum too) I was there on a weekend though, so I didn't see how much messenger action there was. I happened to get in on the friday evening of July critical mass and saw it go by and surprisingly it was considerably smaller than the ones here in Toronto. I don't know why, but I expected something bigger from MTL. I'll pass along the url for this thread to a friend here who used to work as a messenger there...
