Just had my first crash..

Well I was riding my fixed gear to Radioshack with a friend to pick up a soldering iron and as I was cruising through the stadium lot (I go to Virginia Tech), I decide to pick up the pace a little bit and took a corner too fast+low. The ground was slippery because it had been raining and I think my pedal hit..Thank the big man upstairs I was wearing gloves... No lasting damage except for this awesome scrape right on my ankle and some fresh asphalt on my shorts+jacket. I think the bike is okay--I bent the bars crooked but I just bent 'em back--i'll wrench on them tomorrow. I think I lost my watch when I slammed into the ground, kinda bummed about that, although it's just as likely to have be somewhere in the dorm. Apparently it was a pretty epic skid/slid.

Just thought i'd share.

Part of the learning curve. Nobody likes to wipe out, but to a certain degree I'd say it's pretty much inevitable.

shapelike 10-19-06 05:45 PM

Sounds like one of those "learning experience" crashes. You made out pretty good and won't forget what happened anytime soon. Glad to hear you're okay.

I hit a pickup truck today. Consider yourself lucky.

12XU 10-19-06 06:50 PM

A girl walked into the side of my bike while taking a corner today. Hooray for oblivious college students!

mander 10-19-06 07:19 PM

Hey if you literally "bent" your bars then you ought to get new ones, especially if they're aluminum. If they just got knocked around in the stem it's less of a biggy.

vespoli 10-19-06 07:20 PM

Ouch! Sorry to here about everyone's experiences, yeah I did make it out pretty much unscathed. I knew I would crash at some point, especially as I have been getting faster and more daring. :D

Thanks for the <3.

um why did u pay him if he was illegally in the bike lane. i would have told him, he need to pay me.

silent1 10-19-06 08:00 PM

Wet leaves are the problem around here. I saw someone go down the other day and about ate it today.

because he was turning at the intersection, it was perfectly legal, he just stopped suddenly for a ped in the crosswalk, i ran into him.

I got in to an accident with a ford taurus a few weeks back. Trashed my newish spicer frame and fork. Still don't have a fixie to ride, just a bmx which doesn't really cut it for long distances. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pick up a new rim for the conversion I slapped together. sigh. Didn't have to pay anyone and I didn't get hurt much, though.

p3ntuprage 10-19-06 08:48 PM

sounds like the time i learnt never to take fast corners in the wet on brand new tyres.

time to crack open something cold and alcoholic to kiss it better.

I know here is the boston area there are a lot of circumstances where a car can legally be in the bike lane while in an intersection... And if you hit someone from behind it pretty much your fault becuase just as if you where driving a car your supposed to keep a safe stopping distance... it sucks balls but that's the way it is..

Shame nobody gets these crashes on video. We'd all make some 'sweet moolah' off 'Funniest home video' type shows if our crashes were taped.

I might invest in one of those tiny camera's like some taxis have. ;)

A couple weeks ago I learned that if you damage your front fender in a crash, it's a good idea to take it off if you would like not to go over the handlebars ten minutes later.

trackstar10 10-20-06 07:48 AM

ive ridden my bike into mailboxes and trash cans, and i have the scars to prove it.

Did you get her number?

jmberg 10-20-06 10:25 AM

I saw a textbook "dooring" the other day on Mass. Ave near Porter. I was on the sidewalk locking my bike up. There was a woman sitting in her car just ahead of me. No break lights, car turned off. An instant later, I hear a crash and look up to see the biker down, door open, and woman looking PISSED. The biker gets up and tries to scream at her, but he's still got no wind in his lungs, and all that comes out is a barely audible "F***ing stupid... Got to look before..." And he just limped away, mumbling more expletives. That was it. I told her she really should remember to look carefully before swinging her door open, and the response was "Whatever."

hopefully karma will repay me if my bike gets wrecked by a car.

I would've gone to a salvage yard (or even ebay) and got him one that way! Unless it was a late model car...

i got doored recently down here in yuppieville (bethesda, md). yellow minicooper, opened the door when i was about 6 inches away - i flipped over his door and landed in the street. he started telling me it was my fault because i was the moving object and he was parked, so we called the police who informed him that mont. co. specifically prohibits opening your door into traffic.

overall i made out okay, just a few scrapes, a decent new front rim (mavic cosmos) and $300 from geico. but made me a lot more wary of parked cars. i know i'm lucky.

stephenhatesyou 10-20-06 01:24 PM

i don't ride within dooring distance of cars if i can help it.

i'm off for now to partake in a very wet race, maybe i'll have a new contribution to this thread when i return.

That's crazy, especially because Mini Cooper's dont have a frame around the door window glass. The glass is just sticking up out of the door. So if the window was "up", you must have flown over a panel of glass, but you could have broken it right off......you know??

Before I was really conscious of pedal strike, I took a sharp corner at the bottom of a hill really fast, and because there was another hill after the corner, I kept pedalling.. next thing I knew there was this pain in my ass. Quite literally. But I was still riding. My rear wheel raised up when the pedal hit, and because I was on a turn, it skipped up and fishtailed out, but I kept it up somehow..

And somehow all this force got imparted on my ass.

vespoli 10-20-06 04:39 PM

Nice toy model of the car >_>
