fighting the wind
it was so windy yestarday in brooklyn that i was nocked off of my bike coming down marcy ave right by the projects. i was moving at a good pace and i took my hands off the bars and sat up for a second, the wind just hit me from the side and literally pulled the bike from under me. i fell back and cut my leg pretty bad. i don't know if anyone experienced a fall or a crash from a strong winds, but i was wondering how do people ride with wheel covers and other assorted aero designed wheels in the wind. or what about the wind knocking you into the path of a moving vehicle or even worse off the side of a cliff. i don't know the possiblilities are endless.

sorry to hear about your accident.
i haven't been knocked down yet but have had my bike move around under me as a result of some strong gust or wind. I have wheels with areo spokes but might go back to my old wheels with normal spokes just to see if there is a difference.

I would hope people are keeping their wheel covers and aero wheels on the track, and not trying to use them on the street -- precisely because of the wind issue.
Well, that, and they're really pretty damn expensive for everyda use.

I rode around yesterday too - I think my bike slipped under me a few times which is no small feat! Good that you're OK!

I was riding on the West Side Highway a few weeks ago, and took my hands off the bars to stretch for a few seconds. Little did I know that I was right by that helicopter landing spot, and I nearly ate it as the wind from a landing helicopter pushed me around. I felt pretty silly.
But not as silly as you kids riding around the streets with disc wheels...

seriously, when it gets this windy, don't take your hands off the bars or sit straight up. The wind will knock you around too much.
I learned how to deal with the wind from riding in chi-town winters, that **** was no joke.

Used to ride with a pair of HED 3's alot training and racing Triathlon. Those things built upper body strength trying to keep a straight line in the South Florida crosswinds especially using aerobars most of the time.

I was on the WSH today and the wind was pushing those deep V's around pretty good. At least the wind wasn't in my face the whole time.

Yeah. When I used to ride with a Spinergy Rev X wheelset a long while back, I got knocked over. It was embarassing more than anything. Those things are like sails.

Dude!!!! MAJOR flashback. Last week on my way to work we had a front come through that brought wind gusts up to like 35-40mph at times. It was coming from different directions so was extremely unpredictable. Had one gust hit me on the right side while I had a 18 wheeler on my left that I was passing and almost threw me into the truck where the tractor and trailer meet at. SCARY!!!! Called the GF and had her pick me up when I got off work because I was still shaken up up plus was not going to ride home in the dark while the wind was still the way it was.
