What to do with wheels that won't stay true...

I have a set of aeroheads on 32 hole formulas on my main bike right now, laced 3x on dt revs front and back. So anyway, internet deal two months ago, in retrospect a crappy build even if they were "handbuilt". I knocked the rear wheel out of true after a week (and got a small dent in the rim), had it trued, and within three weeks the front and back were both out of true. So I had them trued and retensioned front and back about a month ago by my most trusted shop (they said the front wasn't bad tension wise, but the back was pretty bad), and already the rear is wicked out of true and the front is a tiny bit. I've talked to several people that roll this same setup and go 6 months plus of hard riding without trueing. I'm 165 max and I haven't put more than about 75m a week on them most of the time i've had them. I make way more attempts than most to avoid potholes/pavement imperfections/expansion joints/etc. No bunnyhopping, very little flying off curbs. Only kinda mean thing I do to them is roll over the expansion joints on the backside of the williamsburg bridge (kinda burly this time of year) but i get light, get the front wheel off the ground at least, and its not like everyone else in my neighborhood is truing wheels every 3-4 weeks like this...So yeah, what should I do? Take 'em to a different shop to be retensioned, have them rebuild them, etc? This **** is annoying the hell out of me...

Time to buy new wheels...dented rims shouldn't be rebuilt..

Check IRO out, I've never heard a bad thing about his wheels, and they are indeed built by professional wheelbuilders...

Only thing is, IRO wheels are Velocity Aeroheads laced to Formulas.

what's wrong with velocity aeroheads laced to formulas? lots of people ride that set up from both IRO and many other sources, it's a quality wheelset

Was the wheelset sold as a "Velocity Wheelset"? I purchased a Velocity wheelset built with titanium spokes as was recommended by one of their authorized dealers. (Velocity doesn't sell wheels directly but through about 12 or so sources). I kept breaking spokes in the rear wheel. Luckily I asked for extra spokes and had my local guy replace and re tension the rear wheel. After breaking my 3rd spoke I contacted Velocity (The manuf directly) which was almost a year after purchasing the wheels. They with no pressure on my part offered to rebuild both wheels (the front was fine) with Sapim CX-Ray spokes, saying they would almost weigh the same and be much stronger. They turned over the wheels in 2 days. So about 2000 miles later the wheels have performed perfectly. That is why I asked if they were Velocity made wheels as they have great customer service.

nah, not velocity. custom-build by an online place, whose poor customer service is only surpassed by their apparent poor skills at building wheels. thanks though.

anyway i'm inclined to agree with you soyboy--i've heard plenty of people rave about this exact build (done by other builders obviously) who ride way harder and way more than me. it is definitely a build issue...

Well whats interesting is Velocity actually doesn't build the wheels. Each distrubuter/seller gets all of the parts, including the box from Velocity and has either their mechanics or local builders build the wheels. So if both of us say buy the same "Velocity" wheels from different sources the build quality of the wheels may be different. The wheels I origionally got were built OK but not great, as my local guy had to make some adjustments. The guy at Velocity itself where I sent the wheels back was great. Knock wood, the wheels have been perfect for my 2000 miles.

so seems the concensus is rebuild i guess. Are we talking throw out the spokes & nipples, possibly the rear rim if its dented bad enough (i honestly can't see the dent, shop said it was very small and showed it to me but I can't find it now), and start over?

I guess, if nothing else, I can finally get that unmachined rear that i wanted from the start but the builder forgot...

When I bought my wheels from Tony (IRO), he told me that Velocity actually does the build. I have heard this from other sources as well.

This is definitely not true. Tony must be mistaken. Not only did I purchase ""Velocity" branded wheels from one of their authorized sellers, but the owner of the seller told me that he has a highly regarded (his opinion) local wheel builder do his wheels. This was confirmed when the owner of Velocity, itself, called me on the phone when he read my email of the problem. I was totally impressed by his desire to make things right. Especially when he agreed to rebuild the front wheel when I mentioned it wouldn't match the rebuilt rear. He said he would have his designer/builder at the factory rebuild the wheels. The builder followed up with an email a week later to make sure I was happy. I am beginning to think that companies that rely on the internet for sales are so concerned about these forums that they give better service than LBS, I'm sorry to say. As I said in a previous post, Velocity provides all of the materials included to make the wheel, including hubs that say "Velocity" which are actually made in Japan by Formula ,the boxes and packing that say Velocity and keeps their suppliers in stock. The authorized sellers, some are on the internet and some are stores, pay for the materials and make a profit by selling the finished wheel.

Hmmm, I doubt Tony was confused (he seems like he has a fair amount of business) or that he was lying. I also know I have read in this very forum about the wheel builders at Velocity from some guy who worked down the street from them. Maybe then don't always do it, but I am pretty sure they do build wheels.

I actually asked Tony to get me wheels w/ Phil hubs laced to Deep V's and asked him how long it would take him to build them. He told me he just sends his order on directly to Velocity and that they build them up.

This is the list of online dealers.

https://www.velocityusa.com/default.asp?contentID=552

Each and every one has their O W N person ( whether a person in their company, or a local person) build the wheels for Y O U. You can call them or email them and discuss how you want Y O U R wheels built according to your riding style, weight etc. For example I originally wanted relatively light wheels but I weigh 210 lbs, so I talked to Gregg at Superspokes and he recommended H E have H I S wheelbuilder build M Y wheels with Areohead Rims, titanium spokes with 28 1X in the front 32 spokes 2X in the rear. Oh by the way the wheels were shipped in a Velocity box from H I S builder from a different address than Superspokes. I don't know how I can make this any clearer. Is it possible that on occasion Velocity directly makes some wheels and offers them to their distributors maybe maybe not, though I have never heard this. But their normal way of business is to have their distributors/sellers MAKE THE WHEELS. Your guy is giving you wrong information

OK, buddy settle down. I am just telling you what I was told and what I have heard elsewhere. You need to relax a bit. Getting a bit overly worked up.

BTW, that page says N O T H I N G (ahhh cute, I can type like a tool also) about who builds the wheels. It says they only work w/ retailers and that they don't sell directly to end consumers.

As I posted 3 times. Each seller/distributer/store that is authorized to sell Velocity "branded" wheels arranges to have the wheels built on their own. Whether someone in their employ, someone locally, or even their grandmother. It doesn't matter who. It gets done. Period. I know this by talking to two of these sellers eventually buying from Superspokes, who in effect gave me a custom wheel. The key word being custom. And I was told this by the President of Velocity on the phone. That is certainly good enough for me. I don't know how I can make this more clear. Maybe someone else can explain it better. If your local person is telling you something different, I don't care. Believe whatever you want to believe.
