Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Oh...here's a jackass bike I built for my son....

with a very high-tech fixed gear conversion!

this rear wheel was best use for a 24" wheeled Free Spirit bike a co-worker brought to work & left outside that I could think of.

I don't think that bike is jackass, but it's not as good as it could be imo.

Burning through the grease is never a good way to get a clean weld. Plus, using flux core wire is inherently messy. Didn't shave the braze-ons either....darnit, I knew i'd forgotten something!

Just don't put much back pressure on it as it will just unscrew the whole assembly.

I'm actually making fun of myself, but my 11yr old son & I have had fun with his fixed gear "stunt" bike & the damned thing pretty much became a parts donor to keep 3 or 4 of our 'real' bikes in running shape, so it's all good. Whatever the case, flux core wire is truly messy as hell to weld with! peace

Just don't put much back pressure on it as it will just unscrew the whole assembly.
- Maybe, but the nice (???) thing about a steel hub is that you can weld the smallest cog to it, using the groove between the cog & hub as your engineered bevel (like the welding manual would have you make), so if the entire welded surface (360 degrees) were to break free, yes. I'd consider that event to be unlikely. That said, isn't it all about livin' on the edge anyway?....lol.......maybe I should get the chain powder coated too.

doh, thought you just welded up the space between the freewheel body and the small cog... if the whole thing is welded to a steel hub, it should be pretty much indestructible.

to be fair about the story, this incarnation was just a stop on its way to the recycling bin since the tube still held air and my son said he wanted to try out a fixed gear and I had this 24" wheel MTB I'd been cannibalizing for parts.

I'm usually not a stickler on footretension but it does come in handy if you want to stop, being brakeless and all...

perpendicularity. you cant run every stop sign and red light. let me give you an example. i was going about 30 mph down a hill today when i saw cars at the bottom of the hill, going perpendicular to the direction i was going. i realized that since the cars were perpendicular to the way i was going i should stop. why? because these cars would hit me if i tried to pass through them perpendicularly, which would probably kill me. so, i stopped, using my clipless pedals (i hear clips and straps work too). then i rode away. i didn't look like a badass, but the riding away part was nice.

yeah. I agree fully. in fact, I use a brake for those 'unplanned stops' when I'm riding FG. Platform pedals & no brakes makes the bike look like an accessory...which, to me doesn't exactly equate to 'cool.' But, then again, what I do I know? I still think of threadless headsets as new technology

The platforms are just so that I can use winter boots. I really miss foot retention on hills (up and down) but stopping really isn't an issue with this low gear. I've considered running one of the brakes, but I'm never hauling ass down hills with platforms. (I did it once, SCARY) But yeah I've been riding fixed for 2 years, brakeless for like a year and a half, never really any issues, even now that I'm not runnning retention for the winter.

yeah dude, it sucks not having it on the hills(up) especially. This'll be motivation for me to ditch clips and straps, and go clipless this spring

when i see you riding your bike, set up how it is, i'll be sad for both of you. good thing your getting clipless, but really... i don't know how you'll like that if you think straps and clips are a huge inconvenience. if your so opposed because of your platforms you could get some holdfast straps. it's either lazy or naive to be brakeless w/out some foot retention.

Decent hiking boots + clips and straps. Mine are rated down to -35F and keep my feat toasty on 2-4 hour rides. No retention is a recipe for disaster.

No, the chain is moving backward. So if you define the direction the wheel turns when you ride as positive, the wheel is moving faster, because the speed of the chain is negative, so the wheels speed of zero is faster.
