great, but regular milk comes from one of the most corrupt sectors of the food industry. antibiotics, growth hormones from monsanto, pesticides... there's a reason it's so cheap (and pasteurized - the living quarters are absolutely filthy).

even organic milk can be sketchy because of the diluting of the organic label.

soy is not exactly any better, there's controversy over all kinds of things in soy (plant estrogens, protease inhibitors, antinutrients, etc.) but atleast i find the westsoy stuff to be tastier/better mouth feel than regular milk.

now good cheese on the other hand, there's no question who comes out on top with that (and it's definitely not the vegans).

Far more pesticies are used in the production of soy
than the production of milk. Commodity milk prices
have plummeted over the past few years, which has
lead to the phasing out of BGH. Organic milk standards
are as high as they ever were, although there is some
evidence that Horizon has been skirting the standards
in order to meet the demand from Wal-Mart. There
are plenty of reasons not to drink milk, but those aren't
them.

Hey, i have no idea how they make this *****. All i know is, i have been to a dairy farm in Saudi Arabia... what i saw was a bunch of cows hooked to machines... they try very hard to keep things sterile.
Also i saw the little calves in there cages.
I saw some crazy equipment but i wasn't listening to what it did.

But as to how they grow the cows, no idea. Do cows always lactate??? Wiki time.

well the auto industry did buy up all the public streetcar companies in the early 20th century and run them into the ground, and they didn't even have to pay off anyone to do that.

to stay on topic, I dont drink regular milk cause it's nasty. soy milk is aight, but like has been mentioned already, there's not really a shortage of soy protien in the average diet. rice milk is better anyway.

Organic soy milk is easy to find / not very expensive. The soy that is being heavily sprayed is the stuff being used for huge companies to make soybean oil out of. Health food soy is generally easy to be had non GMO/organic.

Horizon was exactly what I was talking about when I said what I did, and they're like the largest producer of organic milk. Horizon sucks.

How do you know rBGH is being phased out?

Ideally, in a perfect world all milk should be consumed raw. But with the sketchy factory farms of the modern world and the few obscure, family-ran farms that aren't perfect in cleanliness, this is not so ideal anymore unfortunately.

By the way, I love soy.

Are you the one who is worried about laxed organic
standards? If your soy milk is not organic or does
not specifically state it, then it IS GMO. But yes,
certified organic soymilk is relatively easy to come
by.

Horizon was exactly what I was talking about when I said what I did, and they're like the largest producer of organic milk. Horizon sucks.
Then say that Horizon milk has questionable standards,
but don't imply that all the standards have thereby been
dilluted.

Because my partner is a food scientist, and my family
are all Monsanto chemists.

crazy.

what do you personally think of monsanto than, since your family is involved with them?

with walmart wanting a bigger chunk of the organic business, the standards are being diluted. it's just not a sustainable operation on an extremely large scale. the best bet, if you care about these things, is to support your local farmer's market and get organic produce from there whenever possible (unfortunately, impossible to do year round, but people have dealth with the changing seasons since the beginning of mankind up until the advent of the airplane / being able to ship food from halfway across the world).

Monsanto is a huge, multi-facted company. Most of the work they do is normal boring stuff, and most of my family now work for Solutia, which was the spin-off of their life sciences division. On the other hand, they do some pretty awful things, like genetically engineered livestock to produce more meat, and the patenting of seed lines, with all the ensuing legal action when they fail to control their own crop.

with walmart wanting a bigger chunk of the organic business, the standards are being diluted. it's just not a sustainable operation on an extremely large scale.
No, the standards on everything organic, except pork, have remained the same since the National Organic Standard Act was passed in 2002. Horizon violated the law, and they're now facing huge fines (something on the order of $10,000 per violation) and a loss of their certification by their third party (QAI, I believe). It is likely that other companies will also be driven by a variety of economic forces (read: It's not all Wal-Mart's fault) to compromise the USDA Organic label, but the rules remain unchanged.

the best bet, if you care about these things, is to support your local farmer's market and get organic produce from there whenever possible
Sadly, many if not most farmers markets are comprised of vendors who simply purchased produce in bulk and are re-distributing it. Certainly this is not always true, but I find that this is more the rule than the exception. However, when you can purchase locally, numerous studies have shown that action have a larger environmental payoff than purchasing organic, especially with major commerical, national brands.

I think local is generally favorable to organic as it is, because food that is shipped halfway around the world is not going to be as healthy as something that was vine-ripened and carried 15 miles to the consumer.

Where did you hear that about the farmer's market?

For years Japanese women have fed their husbands tofu to lower their sex drive. Soy has lots of phytoestrogens in it, which lowers sex drive in men and women. Soy milk contains 20 to 35 milligrams of isoflavones per cup. One study showed that a tofu-based diet did affect testosterone levels. When men are given estrogen compounds, sex drive often suffers...

I still drink soymilk in my coffee because I'm lactose intollerant, but as a meat alternative, Tempeh and Seitan are better for you than Tofu.

i haven't read all through this thread, so sorry if i'm being completely off topic or if this has been mentioned before.

A friend of mine is a nutritionist, herbalist, and practicioner of traditional chinese medicine. she gave me some good advice on tofu - that, though it's healthy, it's best eaten in moderation. it inhibits functioning of the [damn, which organ was it?! spleen? yes! spleen, i think!], which has a lot to do with the distribution of nutrients to the organs and tissues that need them. so, it's best to combine tofu with moving herbs and spices, stuff that will help circulation - currying spices, ginger, cayenne.

i thought that was pretty interesting.

oh, and plus one to monsanto being evil.
