Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Getting a new bike...umm....Which one?

I am riding a steel 12 speed road bike right now, and I'm looking for something lighter to ride in town

I tested the Giant Bowery, it feels just like a road bike. It has flip/flop rear hub, so I can switch around. It's pretty good except....the Bianchi Pista and Iro looks better!!!

All of them are fixed gear..... Which one should I get? or which one is a good entry bike?

Thanks

iro or bianchi. Even though I have a pista and love it, I think I would get an iro with some custom choosen parts atm.

windsor or kilo TT or complete Surly Steamroller... that's what I'm deciding between. Will probably get the Mercier. (bikesdirect.com)

Take a look at the surly steamroller complete, I think it's a great deal for the money. Road frame like comfort, but a shorter wheelbase, and snappy handling. I'd rather by a bike from an LBS I trust and build a relationship with them, especially when you're a beginner and can't do all the maintainance and repairs yourself. A good LBS will make sure you get the right size frame, and give you free adjustments for life. They'll also make sure your headset, cranks, hubs etc are installed and adjusted correctly.

So for me, Surly, Bianchi, Giant, in that order.

get the bike you want. the iro is a cheap relaxed geometry 700c frame with track ends. the pista is a cheap track bike, with track geometry and handling. if you are leaning toward IRO, why not just get an IRO wheelset and convert your 12-speed?

Don't get the Pista--it's a decent bike but overpriced typically.
The IRO is solid
The Steamroller Complete is solid
The SOMA Rush Frame is decent mid-range steel and
a nice compromise in geometry--not really steep headtube
angle and short wheelbase but not totally relaxed either.

Seeing that so many are so anti pista now-a-days, I say go for the pista. It is a beautiful bike, and no one wants them anymore.

Same, and imagine all the hipster flack you'd get from all the original highwheelers. Wearing tailcoats and a top hat serves to only make the situation worse.
