SS/FG for a fat kid
Hey guys, looking for some advice for my buddy.
He's really dead-set on getting a SS or FG but he's like 5'9 240lbs. What are his options as far as what to look for in frames & tires?
should he just get a steel road frame and convert it? or would a fixed-specific frame be fine?
thanks for the help.

240 lbs isn't that heavy.
IRO jamie roy would probably be a good choice- you can run fat tires, which keeps a lot of the strain off the wheels/components.

i'm 6'1" and 235-40 last i checked, but not really fat. Old 80's fuji road frame with cheap deep v's, ride it hard every day and have over 1000 miles on it.
i don't think, at this point, his weight is a problem, only when people get into the high 200's and over 300lbs. Just get whatever.

Jeez - you guys are weak sauce... I weigh 285 lbs and haven't had a problem with any of my bikes. What are you concerned about breaking under weight? The only thing I worry about/replace are wheels/hubs - but that's only if they break.

well the reason i bring it up is that he's riding an old road frame right now that creaks like hell when he starts going fast (part old parts, part chubby friend). just wanted to see if there were any considerations that were necessary. he's gonna be riding it in boston's potholed streets so i thought wheels & rims could potentially be an issue.

I was 230 when I first started riding. I started on an old steel conversion, which I would say is a good start. My first wheels were cheap, and by the time I needed replacements I weighed 170. If dude rides enough, when he loses weight he'll probably be stronger than you!

He is a light weight! I am 280lbs and 6'6". A conversion would be a good starter bike, and if he decides he likes it he can always upgrade later. As for an off the shelf bike I think something with a steel frame would be the best choice if he decides to go that route. But, I will say don't skimp on the wheels. I was riding a formula hub/Mavic CXP22 32H wheelset and the rear wheel didn't like it. I had to true my wheels more than I should have. That problem as been solved with a Formula/Deep V wheelset 36h I am riding now. Deep Vs are a bit of a fashion statement it seems, but they are beefy for a road rim. I run skinny 700cX23 tires on all of my rides (Two can't fit any bigger if I wanted too).

By God, this is the first original question/remark on this forum in three years. Flabberjabbered!
That being said, this fat kid is useless without pictures.

Does your friend not ride a bike too often? I'm not trying to make fun of him, but get him riding it everyday in Boston and he'll drop 40 pounds easily. Also, don't forget there is a clydesdale section on here, so you might get some good advice from there too.

may I suggest the clydesdales forum?
I myself, 270, 6'1", have never had a problem on any bike I've owned. just don't do anything carbon, it will shatter, bloodshed is a bad method if he's trying to lose weight.
