Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

paired spoke wheels (fixed rolfs?)

some custom builder is gonna start making ti-frames with the look of more traditional track frames

webbbing paint jobs (colnago, casati, daccordi, late masi)

and eventually doing away with wheels altogether and just going to hover bikes

it seems as though the big draw about fixies (or bikes in general) is all of the little customizations with parts/gearing/sizes/etc. so, where is there to go? customized frame construction. i might see people getting steel from multiple bikes, and then having a custom bike builder lug the pieces together. think about the possibilities: different steel types for seat tubes and top tube, mismatched stays, a bianchi headtube with japanese track steel tubes. that way, the rider can pick the parts out individually, butcher more than one bike, and then ride something that no one else has.

also, i second the carbon fiber trend in both wheels and seatposts.

Eventually gold sprints will be regular events at college sports
bars and Mormon gatherings--their ubiquity will signal that
fixed gear culture has been dead for at least 3 years.
Most of the sprints will be with the front wheel locked to those
stupid deals that allow you to spin even if you can't ride rollers.
Some die-hards will actually race their NJS bikes at their frat
parties and to "keep it real" fly in a chorus line of cheering Japanese
women (see picture). The aging fixed-gear thugs of yesteryear will
convert to retrogrouchery and worship at the Rivendell temple
under Roshi Grant Peterson. They will eventually come up with an
elaborate narrative justifying why retro-3 speeds are cooler and more
useful than track bikes--now synonymous with frat boys and guidos.

I'd love to see that. All the hipsters riding into the wrong side of the road at every turn because of the toe overlap.

1. Trendy kids driving their parents 13 mpg SUV 40 miles each way to ride three or four miles on their fixies so as to be seen at the hip spots. Oh wait...that already happens where I'm at.

2. News coverage of the "new trend" of fixed gear riding as a dangerous hobby and a sign that your teenager is using drugs.

3. Full kit riders being seen with top tube protectors and denim jackets with a bunch of patches on them.

4. Revo-wheel will make a debut...at the end of 2008 and then close their doors forever by the beginning of 2010.
