A Fitting Tribute to Sheldon - Sturmey Archer ASC Sheldon Brown Model?

Over in C&V, we've been talking about building, then auctioning a bike in Sheldon's memory, and giving the money to MS research. Opinion has been divided between building a fix, because of how much his fixed gear page has been useful, or a crazy, 8 speed hub, 7 speed cassette, triple chainring monster - rather like some of the bikes he built, but taken to an even greater extreme. The suggestion was raised that we ought to try to fix an 8 speed hub somehow, but then an even brighter idea came up. Why not lean on SA to action their released ASC, and call it the Sheldon Brown model. This would be easier to effect if we had a large number of people expressing their willingness to buy. Who's in?

I see that in the RIP Sheldon sticky, there's an email address to contact SunRace regarding this. I wasn't aware of that, and wasn't trying to jump anyone's idea. I'll copy that address here, and recommend that everyone contact them, but I'll also contact them and make reference to the thread here, so that they'll have further evidence of support.

The address is:

This is a unique idea and a fitting tribute. If I had the extra cash I'd be all over that hub.

in as well. But I really think it would be fitting to have a company name a bike after him, equipped with the ASC model. Sun might need an oem account in order to get the ball rolling. I wiould think tooling costs for something like this would be very high, so they need guaranteed orders. If anyone has friends in the industry, use them now. Which company would do it. IRO might, but they proabably don't have the influence. Bianchi? Kona?

If they're not building it now, odds are they won't ever. Just do something in Sheldon's name that you can completely control and feel good about.

Me, I'm donating to MS and Bikes for Rwanda.

Think positive! There have been rumors about them bringing the ASC back. I think they're on the brink, if they haven't already taken the plunge and started pre-manufacturing planning.

I am really torn about this hub: I don't need it as I don't do FG, and I am a student with no income at the moment, so I try to say clear of unnecessary spending. I might order one, nonetheless, as Sheldon meant so much to me, even if we never met in person.

Yes - if they've been seriously considering it, a groundswell of interest might tip them over. If not, oh well - what have we lost? I don't think this will stop us building a C&V Sheldon Bike.

Should we leave these efforts up to Harris Cyclery and his Family? Grossroots love is great, but it is my opinion that these sensitive issues are best left to the discretion of his friends and family.

To whom it may concern:

As you may or may not have heard already, cycling guru Sheldon Brown has passed away. He was a strong advocate for fixed gear bicycles, and cherished the old Sturmey Archer ASC 3-speed fixed. He was also big in the push (at least outside of Sun Race) for a re-make of such a hub. Now that plans are in the works for such a hub, I feel that it would be very appropriate that this new ASC be somehow tied to Mr. Brown's name and memory. I hope you seriously consider this, as he has touched more lives than many could even dream of.

I don't know. Sheldon was a very public presence, and I have a feeling that his family will appreciate spontaneous outpourings of appreciation from the people he touched. In other news "grossroots" is a great typo.

Also - big up Retem, who had this idea first, and also to whoever proposed it in C&V. Neither of these was me - I'm just agitating to make it happen .

Does the subject ASC hub refer to a fixed multi-geared hub?
A two- or three-speed fixed-gear bike represents, in my mind, the absolute ultimate of bicycling.

Please confirm this, and, if so, I will actively lobby Sturmey-Archer or Sun Race, or whatever they call themselves.

Yes, it is to be a 3-speed fixed hub. Apparently they were popular with English club racers in the olden tymes and Sun Race was considering bringing it back. I want one for my IRO Rob Roy, if it ever gets here....

For me it would be the absolute best commuting drivetrain.

Instead of just marketing and selling this hub and then it be gone again, Sun Race should set up a rebuild program. As these hubs are probably hard to maintain, they could offer service and extra parts, and thus creating more of a market for the hub to be around for longer.
