Deep-V's are indeed a durable rim, but I don't understand why most people don't run something lighter. I recommended my brother to build a set of wheels with Deep-V because 1)He was loaded touring on bike, 70+ lbs of gear. 2) He is 190 lbs 3) He is a hammer who destroys weak equipment. Otherwise they are overkill.
I run Aeroheads on my road bike, 24/28 hole, DT Rev spokes, alloy nipples. I have also CX'ed on these wheels. They have never been trued after initial build, many thousand of miles.
People also talk about the aero benefits of Deep-V - sorry, they aren't aero, just heavy. If you want aero, run some bladed spokes like DT Aerolite, Sapim CX-ray.
Oh, Mavics don't run excessively high spoke tension, nothing more than a normal wheel. This is based on mavics on my cross bike, don't remember exact #, but it wasn't abnormal.
People are really uninformed about rim selections. DT, Sun, IRD, Kinlin, Mavic, Salsa, etc. all make rims that are very good. People should diversify, some of these rims are really good and just the same $ or cheaper.
I would think most waif-ish hipsters could get away with a 2X 24 hole front/ 3x 28 hole rear, with DT Rev's, and never have any wheel issues. That would be a FULL 1 LB lighter in just the wheels!

Little late to the party but I've got Mavic MA2 and Open Pros with 1000's of miles and no need for truing.

Radial lacing is fine with almost all high quality(not necessarily high priced) hubs these days and is often superior. 18h isn't such a good idea unless the whole wheel is specially designed around it.

(> 99% of) people have deepVs because of the colors and the touch it gives to their bike...
The "bombproof/aero thing" is just complete BS, just a way to justify their use.
(I have not read the beginning of this discussion)
