Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Thoughts on this wheel?

What is advantages and disadvantages of having a 27" over a 700c wheel? I am soon to be converting an older schwinn frame to a fixed gear and I am looking for a rear wheel, I found one that is 27" here is the link, What is your thoughts. Thanks.

You seriously limit yourself with 27" wheels in terms of tire selection. 700c by far has the most varied, especially if you want stuff in colours or want to run ultra fast modern tires like veloflexes paves or michelin pro race etc. etc.

Since you're not running a rear brake there's no reason to stick with 27". Some people don't like the fact that a 700c wheel will drop the rear end of the bike by 4mm. In reality this isn't an issue, especially when you consider the variety of tire sizes you can run.

That wheel would've been decent had the rim be 700c. CR18's, good solid rim. Formula hub = good. The one last thing would be that since it's not mentioned it's hand built you can assume it's machine built garbage. Which means you normalize tension/stress relieve and true yourself.

Unless you want a wheel that falls apart after 100km.

i had that exact wheelset on my conversion. it's what the LBS sold me becuase of the old frame I was converting, 27" inch wheels were the correct size for it. it was bad because it definitely limited me to getting a whole new wheelset once i got a track specific frame. with all that said, they are definitely good wheels, double walled rims, whatever else.

edit: i shouldn't say what the LBS sold me was bad, they were right. they sold me the right wheelset for the frame. i just didn't know enough at the time
