3/32 chain and cog 1/8 crank?

i went and got a 17t cog yesterday but they only had 3/32 and so the lbs dude was like you can run a 3/32 cog and buy a 3/32 chain and you will be fine even though the crank is 1/8. he said it will work fine as long as i dont use a smaller chain.

has anyone else ever ran different sized drivetrain parts? how did it work out?

is this legit? like is it gonna some how kill on me? i saw this dudes post and he said he had wrong cog and it broke and he got messed up.

LBS dude fail.

3/32 chain will not work if your chainring is 1/8. But your chainring might actually be 3/32 inwhich case you're OK.

Your LBS is wrong. Go back and have him show you how to use a 3/32nd chain on a 1/8 chainring.

Your can run 1/8th chain on the 3/32 cogs and chainrings if you need to but not the other way around.

Considering 3/32 is smaller than 1/8...

okay i just checked the box and i got a 1/8" chain and cog and i got a 3/32 crank.
the crank is the stock crank on the kilo tt.
now that thats cleared up and i have a 1/8 chain and cog and a 3/32 crank will i be okay?
and will it still work correctly? or is there anything i should look out for?

Yeah, fail.

I run a 1/8" chain and cog that works just fine with a 3/32" chainring.

I run a 3/32 chain with a 1/8 42t front and a 3/32 Dingleberry rear.

3/32 vs 4/32 isn't really a significant change in width. I think that a 3/32 5/7/8 speed chain would work ok, but a 9/10/11 might not.

.
No, you don't.

There is NO WAY a 3/32 chain will work on ANY 1/8 chainring or cog.

Wrong again. All 3/32 derailleur chains, those marked 7,8,9,10 speed will work with 3/32 cogs/chainrings. The inner diameter, where it actually matters does not change as you go up in speed. Only the outside.

Well, my bike came with a 1/8in chain, 1/8 freewheel and chainring, and all I did was switch out the rims and put on a 3/32 chain and cog. It worked fine, aside from making a small amount of noise. I checked the chain when I removed it and it had very little sign of any wear. Now, it is possible like someone else said above that it came stock with a 3/32 ring and 1/8in chain, in which case I'm mistaken.

What I was saying about the 3/32 chain is you can probably get away with running 3/32 chain made for old 5/6 speeds since they would have less prescise tolerances vs the newer 8/9/10 speed indexed stuff thats going to have closer tolerances due to indexed shifting. Thats what I did at least.

Your chainring is 3/32.

Your bike will make terrible noise if you use 1/8 chain and anything else 3/32.
