Well, my bike came with a 1/8in chain, 1/8 freewheel and chainring, and all I did was switch out the rims and put on a 3/32 chain and cog. It worked fine, aside from making a small amount of noise. I checked the chain when I removed it and it had very little sign of any wear.
What I was saying about the 3/32 chain is you can probably get away with running 3/32 chain made for old 5/6 speeds since they would have less prescise tolerances vs the newer 8/9/10 speed indexed stuff thats going to have closer tolerances due to indexed shifting. Thats what I did at least.
