I've gone through numerous bags over the years, but the one that I still have after almost 14 years (and end up using almost daily):

and i feel compelled to toss this one into any thread on bags... not the most durable, but one of my favorites :

is that made out of a outside rug? the ones that kind of simulate grass. they normally come in blue and green. if so, does it/did it shed a lot? it looks pretty cool. i would like to see one in person. it sort of reminds me of these.

Seagull bag doesnt unclip, just tightens and loosens.

I've had a couple R.E. Load bags and they've done me well. The main strap on my new one is still really stiff after almost a year (though it isn't uncomfortable), and the side…stuff…that is sown onto the sides of the strap is fraying from the buckley-loopity thing it runs through. The plastic buckles for all the secondary straps keep breaking, though. I have to keep a supply of them handy.

sorry to bring back an old thread, but better bring it back or start yet another bag thread?

anyway. has anyone had should pain/discomfort when they switched over to a R.E.Load bag? last week my shoulder started to bother me. It can be several things, but i never had and pain/ discomfort (unless i was wearing the bag for a few hours) before. R.E. Load has, as i am sure most of you know, a really stiff strap. I have a deluxe version with a pad, but it still gets me. I didn't have any issues in the past with Timbuk2, Chrome, Crumpler, Thrasher, and the countless no names i have owned. I have been using messenger or shoulder bags for about 15 years. so it could have cought up with me. then again this R.E. Load is only a few montsh old.

I was looking at backpacks to spread the weight, or an X strap. I was also looking at getting a Seagull messenger bag. They seem to have a better strap system.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem after switching to R.E. Load.

I am going to make a shoulder pad this weekend and see if that works.

edit: i also just saw the Chrome is not listing their Kremlin in the Mess Bag section, and they are currently on sale on their Backdoor Page for $139 if anyone is interested.

I've developed a kink in my back and my messenger bag seems to be aggravating it. I've had a large Timbuk2 messenger bag for four years now, but I'm not blaming the brand. I'm blaming the uneven weight distribution inherent to all shoulder messenger bags.

So now I'm eyeing up a backpack. Anyone have an opinion on the R.E. Load v Seagull backpacks? I should probably stick with RELoad and hard rep Philly.

Cheers.

I went with R.E. Load, well because I love PA and I wanted to go with a PA company. I was torn between them and Seagull, but I went home grown (I am about 1.5-2 hours north of Philly. could be more depending on traffic on the Schuylkill). I love the bag, made great and i doubt it will ever wear out. but the strap is so thick and unruly, and the shoulder pad is weak. if i have a heavy load the pad feels like a pancake. I rocked my Timbuk2 in college without a shoulder pad for a while and never had a problem. But i am getting older (i can taste my 30's), so i am not sure if it is age mixed with abuse of one shoulder or just the bag. I think i am going to go back to my chrome for a bit, if i can wrestle away from my girlfriend.

Any way, my top three options for a backpack are the Chrome Warsaw, the Seagull large, or R.E. Load midpack. mostly the Warsaw because i like the pockets on the outside of the bag. and i have seen some chrome backpacks and the backs look a little more economical. So they will be a little more comfy over long periods and you will sweat less. but the Seagull seams pretty tight as well. and i like that you can add options to that. I like their U-Lock holster. super easy to mod yourself, but if you are spending over $200 on a bag, another $15 aint breaking the bank. that and if the waterproof liner is sewn all the way in, you will not be able to add it yourself with out ruining the liner. The sternum strap no eh R.E.Load seams a little thin. I know they put a lot of R &D into this bag, so i am sure it does it's job well. probably smaller so you swear less and less to rub on you body. But the Seagull just looks beefier.

ultimately for me it comes down to Seagull (I do not own any of their products yet) or Chrome. Price point is so close in all of them Starting at $230 (Seagull, pre-add on), $250 (R.E.Load pre-add on) or $280 (Chrome no custom add ons).

that's my $.02 on backpacks. I've been looking at them a lot the pat week and half.

Had Timbuk2 Large but now use Chrome Metropolis. Opinions:

Chrome Metropolis:
- more comfortable on the bike
- more convenient strap adjustment
- sewn on reflectors
- better layout of internal pockets
- more heavyweight construction

Timbuk2 Large:
- holds a tiny bit more stuff
- great travel duffel / air plane carry-on

Timbuk2, size small. Had it for years and it's all I need. It's wearing out a bit, though. Thinking of having a custom rasta one made.

found this at the Woodbury outlets with my mom. So far really comfortable haven't had any problems with shifting weight and I can fit a lot of crap in it. I usually dont carry much more than an extra change of clothes fro work though.

I bought a German military-surplus backpack at Cabella's last year for twenty bucks, and despite the harsh wisconsin winter and my tendency to throw my bag at random, it's in basically the same condition as when I got it. The thing is indestructible. The only downside is that it's basically just a sack with a drawstring, a flap, and shoulder straps. There's no little pockets to keep small stuff in, so if I need my mp3 player or something, I've gotta dump out all twenty pounds of random **** in the main compartment.

I'd love to buy a Chrome bag, but to be honest, my neighborhood's reach such a point of hipsterdom that people who don't even own a bike have a Chrome Kremlin on their back... that's all good, but while I tend not to follow trends, I'm deathly afraid of being seen as a messenger poser. Those guys work hard for not a lot of cash, so let them have all the countercultural glory that comes with it (for whatever reason).

[As I was typing this, my sister called to tell me that she just ordered a Seagull, so she's sending me her old Timbuk2. Neato.]

I used a Chrome Citizen for over 4 years before switching to a Seagull bag. In the year that I've used it, the Seagull has been exceptional in every way possible except that it's not a backpack, which I think my spine is crying out for now. The Chrome Ivan and Pawn have looked really good to me, but I'd like to hear from someone who could compare them to the Re-Load, Freight, & Seagull backpacks. Anyone out there use all or some of them? Which do you prefer?

That's a Chrome backpack, but I recently had a Chrome Metropolis start coming apart at the seams on me too after only a month or so of use.

In that first pic, did you go down and hit your head or are you just really upset about your bag?

...and where's that picture taken? the background looks very familiar but I just can'r quite place it... Central station east entrance, maybe?
