Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? When you want to leave the backpack at home...

How do you carry necessities, i.e. tube, tire levers, wrench? I'd rather do something more discreet than using a saddle bag. Both my bikes have Brooks saddles so there's quite a bit of room underneath.

Thanks for the great suggestions so far. The bike burrito was kinda what I was thinking of but I'm leaning toward the Chicagowig super deluxe velo pouch right now.

- attach a trailer
- fedex it
- hire someone to ride with you
- stuff into handlebars/body cavities
- ride one-handed
- drive a car instead

hip pouch? When I ride without a bag it's usually because I am going on a distance ride, and in that case, I'll keep the essentials in a saddle bag, or in the back of a jersey.

what's wrong with a saddle bag? If aesthetics are your main concern, I'd rather have something attractive like an Acorn or VO bag hanging from my saddle than walk around looking not unlike a mom at disneyworld circa 1993.

Good suggestion, except I have no holes on either bike to mount a bottle cage.

Your absolutely right, the velo pouch is treading dangerously close to the realm of the fanny pack. But it does have the benefit that when you leave your bike everything automatically goes with you. I think if money were no object I'd just buy myself a bunch of cycling jerseys.

ahhhh yeah, same thing with me after I used one for a while. I didn't mind the bag, but after taking this picture I quickly went and removed it.

First, I measured the height of my water bottle cage and marked the height on the container. Then I set up a jig matching the height of the mark on the container. I clamped a razor blade in place and rotated the container gently against the blade, scoring the container. A few more turns, and I had a nice clean cut.
Then I just slid the top part inside the bottom half.

It's plenty large to hold any combo of spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, a wrench, allen bolt keys, and CO2 inflator.

i've been thinking hard about this, how to carry the essentials and preserve the minimalism... trying to find some kind of solution rather than compromise. i'm sticking to my small saddle bag for now. i also need a simple+quickly removable system for mounting a light (on the front) if anyone has any cool solutions

I've heard of people using their seat tube, but I'd rather just have a saddle bag to be perfectly honest.

catapult, yes that's good! or,

- attach a basket to your helmet
- use shoelace/lanyard/bike chain/gold chain/gold bike chain/floss/other twine material to wear your seat bag around your neck
- stuff things into your shoes
- system of vacuum tube canister tubes
- buy a carbon frame then store your tools/tube into the cavernous robust bottom bracket (thanks bikesnob)
