Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Brakes, everyones favorite topic

Okay forget brakes or brakeless, this is for my girlfriend so you can't count brakeless out for a little while longer. Just finished bike build based around a scrambler v2 frame, the one and only problem with the frame is there are no braze-ons to run brake cable and guide to the back wheel. My lbs suggested zip ties, I tried this and everything moves far too much for effective brakes. The fronts work great but i can't get figure out how to keep the back tight enough to keep the brakes functional. Any suggestions...

Try another try-off point ie 2 on the TT and one on the ST near the top.

Ya i've got the two on the TT guess ill try the 3rd somewhere on the ST. Worst thing is i'm out one of a thousand zip ties. Funniest part about the zip ties is she got really stoked and wanted to go buy a bunch of neon green ties to match her dp18's

What kind of rear brake are you using? If you're running a full length cable housing I don't understand why a road caliper or linear pull brake wouldn't be functional.

Grouch, i've got road caliper brakes, but not full length cable housing. The housing runs about 6 inches on the front and rear of the tt leaving the middle ~12 inches with exposed cable. The problem I'm having is if i pull the cable itself tight enough, the housing is too tight near the stearer tube to turn the handlebars to the left (rear brake mounted on the right side). Any ideas.

use full length cable housing then if there's no braze ons. housing is like a dollar or two a foot, get like 5 feet and cut to length. done.

Also, if the seat tube relief cut out points rearward you could use one of those cable hangars that were popular on mountain bike some moons ago. That would give the cable and housing and end point/stabilizer.

By all means, get full length of brake housing. And let Sheldon set you on the straight and narrow: https://sheldonbrown.com/cables.html

Surly cable hanger for rear brake. Goes on seatpost binder.

Another seatpost hanger but it's adjustable so you can keep the brakes tight as the cable stretches.

both dirt cheap at Velo-orange.com

you might take a gander at these:

You can spray paint them any color you like.
