41/15 is my harder gear.
41/17 is my hills gear.
Im in San Francisco, with a bunch of hills through my commute. I dont know how some ppl ride a 48:15 (for example). must be leg strength...

Curious, for those who are running ~90 gear inches, how long have you been riding fixed, and how often/far do you ride a day?

Tires make a difference.
I ride 33 X 17 with 60 mm studded tires and brakes on my Surly ice bike, for about 56 gear inches.
I ride 45 X 19 with 23 mm tires and a front brake on a 2005 Bianchi Pista I share with my son, for 62 gear inches; and, when commuting long distances, I change my ratio on this bike to 53 X 17 for 82 gear inches (I can't ride this bike at these gear inches without a brake).
On my Warren Rice custom frame bike, I ride 44 X 19 with 25 mm tires and no brakes for 61 gear inches (the sweetest bike I have ever ridden in my entire life).

Not currently running that high, but last summer I had a 52x15 (91 g.i.) going for TT training. It was great once I got out on the open road, but man it was tough to ride from stop light to stop light.

I think they all come way overgeared for road use. The Kilo WT, which is pretty much the same bike as a Surly Steamroller comes with the same 48 x 16 gearing, whereas the Steamroller comes with a much saner 47 x 19. Of course the Steamroller costs hundreds more, so the saved money can be used to buy a different cog, but it would be nice if they just came stock with proper gearing. Also, I don't like those Tuoro splined cranks they put on most of the Kilos. But I guess that's how they keep the prices down by putting whatever stuff they can easily find rather than ordering specific parts.

48-16 fixed, 48-18 ss on a kilo. Plan on riding 270 miles in two days (2 days apart, 135 mi each way) this week. I'm giving the biking directions on google maps a shot, should be interesting.
