Favorite FG crankset/bb

Hey y'all.

I'm in the process of converting my '77 Schwinn Le Tour II to a fixed gear setup and I'm planning on buying a new crank. What brand would you recommend? I'd like to spend $150 at the most on the crank and possibly bottom bracket. I ebay, too, so used is fair game.

Cheers!
Henry

Most people will recommend these had a chance to test out the Omnium at my LBS, pretty damn good crank very stiff. S300 is a cheaper version of this never tested it, but I have heard it is a pretty good substitute. Both come with BB.

My s300's will be here tomorrow . But yes, that or some Sugino RD's/messengers also are popular cranks.

With a schwinn conversion, you pretty much have to get a square taper bottom bracket in order to get the right chain line. For the BB get the shimano UN54. Its a better commuting, all weather bb than anything more expensive. As for cranks I would go with Sugino RD2/ messenger.

schwinn le tours have a 1 piece ashtabula crank and bottom bracket don't they? if so you will need an adapter to go from the larger diameter Ashtabula btm bracket to a normal sized one. so if your on a budget this might make things a lil difficult AKA more expensive.

Here is the 77 catalog scan for the le tour II, it has a standard crank and bb style, but no info on threading or sizing.

Thanks for posting this, Dr. B. You've done me a great service. I've been looking for a replacement crankset for my Major One. I had never even heard of the Decadence before. But it looks like they're a very good value.
Just ordered a set from Wiggle.

No problem bone machine.

Set up the Decadence with the instructions and you'll find that the chainring likely has to go inboard, not aesthetically perfect but it gives you a perfect chainline. The BB is the same as shimano, cheap as chips and spacers are easily found everywhere.
