I need a new bike, but I can't decide :(

Hello there,

So I'm about to buy my first fixed gear bike, but I'm struggling with making that final decision.
I'm stuck between the Motobecane Track, the Windsor Hour, or the Kilo TT.

From what I've read the Moto Track and the Windsor Hour are basically the same (and they're the same price), but still, which should I get?

And is the 100$ more worth it to get the Kilo TT? I mean, I'm only a newbie, and the main reason why I'm buying a fixie bike is for commuting. I might learn a couple of tricks here and there, but nothing more.

Please help me, ahaha

Thanks!

I took a lot of time reading about those bikes and figuring which one I should get. People like the Kilo and I was almost going to get it but I decided on the Motobecane Track. The main reason I bought mine was for commuting too and this is my first fixed, so I just decided to go cheapest. My budget was $400 so that left room for tools, wheel truing and innertubes.

I picked the Track over the Hour because of no decals. I like the clean look. But you may not care about that.

But people seem to think the Kilo is good for the money.

So in essence I have probably not helped to narrow down your choice.

I know, you pick!

So basically:

If you like no decals, go with Track

If you want a probably more popular bike with cool colors, go with Kilo if you don't care about spending a bit more. I mean, grape soda is pretty sweet! It does come with two brakes as well.

If you don't care about decals, enie menie miney moe Track and Hour.

Or find a 3 year old to pick for you, it don't matter too much.

Or go insane. That happened to me. Is happening?

ahah I'm going insane just trying to pick! I feel like this decision is the difference between happiness and sadness. lol
but thanks! you made my decision a little bit easier. i don't think im going for the hour anymore, it's probably gonna come down to the kilo tt vs the moto. track.

hmm, let's see what other people think!

oh, and also, i'm about 5'5 - 5'6 with an inseam of 30 - 301/2. According to the frame size calculator on ebicycles.com, I should either get a 52 or a 53. So does this mean that a 54 is out of the question? And should I be fine if I go with either the 52 or the 53?

I'm 5'8" with the same inseam as you, and I ride a 52cm Moto Track.

The Kilo also has the nicest fork of the 3.

I have a Windsor and the ride is pretty dead. Not sure if that's a big deal, but it just seems to sap your energy.

I might go smaller... I'm 5'6" - 5'7" with a 30" inseam. I was worried about the bike being too big so I finally decided on the 49cm. Which apparently is like a 51cm anyway for some reason. Different sizing rules I guess. Anyway it's a great size for me. I've read it's easier to adjust things if it's a bit too small than too big.

For me, I got the Dawes SST AL. What won me over was the carbon fork and the fact that like 80% of the components were branded. Most of the components on the Hour, TT, and Track have no brand names. Generic parts are usually not as trust-able as known parts. But that's just what I think. I'm a complete newbie to bikes, but this is how computers and cameras are.

Definately take top tube length into consideration. It would have more of an impact on fitment than standover. Keep in mind Kilo frames run larger so size down if you go that route.

Top tube length

So this is a bike for college - right? If I'm right it doesn't matter because it's going to get stolen within the first couple of weeks.

Out of your original 3 choices I say Hour. Track = Hour frame, but you can expect slightly better components with the Hour (from what I've read, and I've been forum hunting about this bike for months.) I've heard that Kilo TT is a better investment. But from what I've gathered Hour has better wheels (sealed formula hubs, as opposed to just sealed ball bearing hubs with mercier), a slightly slacker track geometry (which is better for communing), and I personally prefer to spend $280 rather than $360, and use the extra $80 on upgrades. I'm about to get an Hour myself, deciding on size. I'm 5'10" / 5'10.5" with 33.5" / 40" inseam, deciding between 54cm and 56cm. Any advice from owners?

Nope. I'm just in high school. And my high school is in a safe neighborhood. Crime is pretty low here. At my apartment crime is also pretty low. People only steal stuff if you've left it locked up for like more than a month or two. But anyways that doesn't matter because the bike will be inside my apartment (there's space in the hallways).

Hmm. I'm still undecided! I think I'll just go with the Kilo TT just because people say it's the best budget fixie bike. And I read somewhere that someone who got the moto. track wished they had spent some more money and gone with the kilo. It's either that or the Dawes.. that bike sounds solid as well.

Thanks everyone for their help so far! I think most of this indecisiveness is just me being paranoid about my first fixed gear bike. But since my last bike was a walmart mountain bike that weighed like 100 lbs, I think I'll be happy with anything!

The Kilo is a fine bike. And they last. Many members have them and have upgraded every part, which is really what I believe it is designed for.

It just doesn't respond well to input. Laggy turn-in. Not the best acceleration (compared to my older Windsor/Cinelli), the ride isn't very supple, etc etc etc. Even my mid 80's Schwinn Premis rides lightyears better than the Windsor.

But it's cheap.

Hey thanks guys for all your help!

Before I make my final decision, I was just wondering. If I do end up doing tricks and stuff, would the Kilo TT be an okay bike for that? I read that there is some toe overlap problems, and I was worried that this would affect the performance during tricks. Also would the bike in general hold up?
