Was not able to get chainring to hit the chainstay yesterday, so all is good to go.

I was gonna say- what about when you put a chain on there.... and then... I thought about it. Seriously... what happens if the chain ring deflects a bit under load? Or if there is a bit of play in the BB?

I did try to get it to flex but wasn't able to get it to flex. Sprinted on it and no flex and there is a chain on it.

The end result with the chainline:

Would have had an awful chainline if I had put the chainring on the outside, think chainring 3/4" off, besides, it's not as close as the picture makes it seem.

Now back to the amusing gorilla pictures.

That happened to me when I was putting my bike together a couple of months ago. Saw that there was virtually zero space between the chainring and and the stays and I was like "well how the **** is the chain going to fit on there? This doesn't make sense."

Then I thought about it and lol'd.

Cool story bro.

The chain isn't on the ring where it passes by the chainstay.

I vote that from now on, all of cc's post must be in gorilla form. End discussion.

Easy way to find out if the bolts are loose. :)

seau grateau 11-19-10 01:18 AM

The frame didn't flex = You have weak legs.

carleton 11-19-10 02:03 AM

What's that, a 53?

The facial hair, glasses, and hat? It looks like it was taken straight from his avatar!

dsh 11-19-10 04:12 AM

My legs are so massive sometimes I flex the frame on my Volvo.

Or I just didn't notice any flex at the moment the other day. Will get a better idea if it hits on Sunday.

It's a 53.

thadcombs 11-20-10 03:21 PM

It'll flex.

Is it square taper BB? If so, the crank will eventually move inwards on the spindle as the spindle / crank interface wears.
You could try a spacer or two in between your cog and the hub, then mount your chainring on the outside of your crank.
Is this a conversion?

You could always have a bit of fun with a mallet if you're feeling brave.

Not a conversion, it's a square taper, didn't have that issue at all with the previous Square Tapered BB with the crank arms on it and the bearings were shot when I went to this setup. Since I made this thread, I went back to a 50 from the 53 and am good on room. Besides I'm probably changing crank setup, soon.

And I'm not putting a mallet to my frame.
