Most people here are cyclists, that is they ride and respect bikes including road and track.
That said, I probably get more crap from roadies for riding a track bike than anyone else. It's understandable, I guess.

SSFG isn't really about being overzealous about fixed gears or having one gear. It's even less about being anti gears or freewheels.

When I was a junior racer, back in the 80s, I got tired of crashing expensive road bikes in criteriums. So I put brakes and a single speed freewheel on an old track bike and used that for flat or slightly rolling crits. I got made fun of, but I also won several races on it.
A bike's a bike, AFAIC, as long as you're in the right gear.

yeah, i had a carbon road bike but sold it and bought a cinelli mash. i ride the same canyons on it, but riding fixed just feels better; less thinking about "brifting" and more about my body. i keep thinking i want another road bike, but if i'm having fun on my typical 40 mile, 3000' of climbing weekend ride, who needs one?

A lot of my thoughts were echoed in that velospace thread. If he would say, "Heh. I just like nice stuff..." that would be the end of it. But, I think he is absolutely convinced that he benefits from it. He takes a lot of abuse online and in person. I'm not sure how or why he keeps putting himself out there like that. He really is a nice guy.
Every sport has guys like this. Some participants get the gear and actually grow the skills that would warrant such equipment. Some get the gear and don't grow very much. But here's the thing, whenever someone has nicer stuff than you, don't assume that they think they are better than you and further, your beating them proves that they are wrong. Don't do that. You just created an enemy and a conflict out of nowhere...all to make yourself feel good when you shouldn't have felt bad in the first place.
EDIT: When I wrote "you" and "your", that wasn't directed to anyone in particular, xkillemallx16

...now if the guy comes over with is expensive gear and calls you a wuss, grabs your girls butt, and challenges you to a race next month for the regional championships (like every 80s movie) then it's OK to kick his ass and feel good about it.
...but you are gonna need:
- Old guy coach/mentor
- Some major unforseen setbacks
- Somewhere to do some rated PG make-out sessions with your girl. ("Make-out Point" will do. Just beware of the bully showing up with his buddies.)
- Some screeeeamin' guitar music
- A montage

My sense of humor obviously doesn't translate well to SSFG. Why so serious?

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
A few years ago I was out on my fg conversion on my usual loop which parallels a busy roadway that was closed off because they were running a triathlon.
Paced one of the riders for a miles and he did a double take and then gave me a thumbs up when he saw I was riding an old fixed gear in my street clothes and he was all kitted out with a pretty nice bike.
I was in top form and was able to knock down a sub hour 40 on my fixed gear so was probably in much better shape and had a lot more miles under me than the tri-guy.
If the route had any decent hills or descents I would have gotten wasted as there is no contest between two fit cyclists when one is riding fixed and the other is rocking gears.
Even then... the kids used to be very surprised when I would bring my "touring" bike on group rides... because how could a steel bike be anything else ?
They can't possibly be fast and if it only has 12 speeds, 27 must be faster.

SixtyFiver, I have been reading about the old Tour de France and just love the way the old school bikes setup and rode. As a result, my Kilo is setup with the same saddle-to-seat drop like your photo above, which is the same as some classic TdF setups. I also prefer the resonance of steel as it feels less buzzy to me.

Three years ago, there was a weekly group ride consisting of mainly fixed gear riders. They had a reputation for going fast. Now, on the same ride, almost everyone brings out the road bike.
