A lot of my thoughts were echoed in that velospace thread. If he would say, "Heh. I just like nice stuff..." that would be the end of it. But, I think he is absolutely convinced that he benefits from it. He takes a lot of abuse online and in person. I'm not sure how or why he keeps putting himself out there like that. He really is a nice guy.
Every sport has guys like this. Some participants get the gear and actually grow the skills that would warrant such equipment. Some get the gear and don't grow very much. But here's the thing, whenever someone has nicer stuff than you, don't assume that they think they are better than you and further, your beating them proves that they are wrong. Don't do that. You just created an enemy and a conflict out of nowhere...all to make yourself feel good when you shouldn't have felt bad in the first place.

My buddy just bought some thousand dollar fuji roadie and we went out riding. Left him in the dust while I was on an old steel conversion. Admittedly I've been living almost car free for a year now and he's just getting into biking but still.
Feels good man...
