Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? But it's still my own fault, eh?

ya i should have said that your being faster on your fg vs road is primarily a function of how you ride, not the bikes themselves.
poor choice of words.

but yeah everything's your fault .

Oh certainly. I ride at a decent clip but don't push myself too hard (partly due to blood pressure meds.... I can push up to a point and then it's just not worth it to push further). It seems like my overall average (including stops at traffic lights, not just rolling time) is almost always 13 mph, but with the FG I find myself doing 16 or even 18 on average.

there's a ton of factors that once added up can be 2-5mph avg difference

all i know is that the speeds i can sustain on my dads new madone/ultegra are about 3mph faster on a 20 mi ride than my 1993cdale/ultegra. the biggest difference is felt in acceleration. on flats, its not as noticeable

so yes you'll be quicker on a road bike if its full carbon vs (im assuming) a steel cx bike w/ non road tires.

Around town I am actually faster on my fixed gear, maybe because SS is a more efficient drivetrain than my roadies' RD and freewheel system, idk.
My 12 mile daily route is just about flat with a few lumps and a gradual incline towards the end.
I know it's repetitive but it all depends on you and your terrain. Drop a tooth out back and see what it feels like, it increases gear inches much more than adding a tooth up front.

42 x 18 is a good cross gear. If we're talking about cross racing, I'm a tiny bit slower on my singlespeed than my geared bike, all things being equal (they never are). If you're riding on the road more than a few miles in the city 42 x 18 even with big tires is fairly low. 70 GI is a good all around road gear for most people. But 42 x 16 would be unworkable in a cross race or off road unless you're a monster.

Depends upon your terrain. 42-18 isn't a particularly high gear so you should be a few mph faster on a geared bike with higher gearing available. I've done a few group rides with my San Jose at 42-15 and been fine keeping up with the others. Then I've been on "faster" group rides and had a guy riding his fixie and it was obvious he could go faster than me on any terrain.

I am faster on my geared bikes because I can match the gearing to the terrain. With a 50-12, I don't spin out on descents until I'm going ~40mph. The 34-27 gets me up long and/or steep climbs without killing myself.
