42 x 18 is a good cross gear. If we're talking about cross racing, I'm a tiny bit slower on my singlespeed than my geared bike, all things being equal (they never are). If you're riding on the road more than a few miles in the city 42 x 18 even with big tires is fairly low. 70 GI is a good all around road gear for most people. But 42 x 16 would be unworkable in a cross race or off road unless you're a monster.
