I grew up in Vista, however, and my parents are there. Graduated from Rancho Buena Vista HS.

How long have you been in Carlsbad/SD???

A little over 18 years in the same condo now--longest I've ever lived anywhere before moving here was 3 years in Southern Holland. GF wants a bigger place, but everywhere we look seems downhill from here: A 3-mile side-street commute, two miles from the beach, a palatial library & non-Starbucks coffee veranda across the street, and a Cinepolis luxury cinema where the seats recline flat-as-a-bed and you push a button and they bring liquor to your chair. :twitchy: I've slept through 3 movies so far, and one of them was the second Star Trek; stayed awake the second time and couldn't believe I'd slept through all those explosions and screams.

I've found JarJar Abrams' latest Star Trek abortions worth sleeping through.

Although I LOVE seeing flicks on the big screen along with the booming audio, I have given up on going to the theater. People can't leave their ****ing phones off for 90 minutes and I find the HUGE GLOWING screens totally distracting. It's really frustrating too because my local theater has nice seats and good sound systems.

My big pet peeve before phones was people eating loud, now throw in phones and the ability to not pause the movie when I have to run to the bathroom, and I have no real desire to ever go to the movies again.

Plus at home I can drink beers and enjoy some devil's lettuce to make even the worst movie tolerable.

sounds like you've got it good. if only your place could magically expand :)

I'll be riding right by your place on Saturday morning down El Camino towards La Costa as I head south. If you hear a "CHRIIIIIIIIIIS!" around 7 it might be me :).

Haven't been to LA recently then?

Pause and replay. My couch. My drinks/popcorn. No annoying people putting their feet up on the chairs. Phones silent. My start time. No expensive tickets.

What is the upside to going to the theater again vs. watching at home?

calamarichris 09-29-16 04:29 PM

The thrill of possibly getting caught obviously.

I dunno I've had pretty good experiences at theatres. I haven't been looking around much when I'm at them to see if anyone is using their phones, but I don't see any pretty much every time I go. I also go to movies like a month after they're released so not very many people in the theatre so not very many loud chewers and people going to the bathroom and such. The screen is huge and the sound system much better than my computer, so I enjoy the experience.

seau grateau 09-29-16 05:23 PM

I like going to the theater sometimes. Some movies you just don't get the right experience at home unless your set-up is ****** as hell. My set-up at home is very much not ****** as hell.

Scrodzilla 09-29-16 06:05 PM

I think the last time I want to a movie theater was over 15 years ago.

Mumonkan 09-29-16 06:22 PM

seriously.

the movie theatre itself is indeed ****** as far as screen size and sound system, but even without the people: what are you guys actually going to see? i literally cannot remember the last film i thought was worth my time and money

TenSpeedV2 09-29-16 08:06 PM

Last movie I saw was the remake of National Lampoon's Vacation. I was in Florida and that's what my dad wanted to see. He regretted that decision. Nice theater however.

seau grateau 09-29-16 08:13 PM

There's been some good stuff the past couple years. I'll go and see pretty much anything from Inarritu, P.T. Anderson, or the Coens. But I'd literally rather burn my money than pay to watch some **** like Jurassic World.

Leukybear 09-30-16 10:14 AM

I'm one to jump on the theaters suck boat.

Carcosa 09-30-16 02:10 PM

I haven't been to a theater for a long time. Been movies I'd like to see, but it's just not on my radar anymore.

In my old city there was a small, single screen theater that had a ton of really good beer on tap and you could get good pizza delivered from next door. They would have old B horror movie nights and also put some games on the big screen. I would have seen damn near anything there.

SpeshulEd 09-30-16 03:33 PM

I should take back the "I hate going to the movies" comment from earlier.

I forgot that we have Filmbar. I've been there a few times in the past couple of years, mostly just for bike documentaries and movies...it's not really a theater tho, more of a large dark room with a screen and crappy sound system, that you can lounge in and watch movies while drinking beers.

seau grateau 09-30-16 06:01 PM

Today I did 35 miles. Was slow up the hills but got a couple descending and sprinting PR's, which was weird. Usually I'm better at the slow hurty stuff.

Alamo drafthouse is where it's at. they will physically remove you if you're caught texting, calling or even talking to the person beside you. it's amazing.

I'm grateful for all the quality independent theaters in LA. So many amazing films to see, so little time to see them.

I've read about this on a film forum that I visit. Someone posted a comment that the owner/manager made in a newspaper in response to a comment by an angry patron who had been booted. His comment (and attitude) were very brutal, like "Good riddance and never come back!" I loved it. He was hard core in favor of protecting the audience that cared about the film experience.
