Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It seems like downhill (mtb) cranks could be ideal for a bombproof fixie or singlespeed.
with one problem: chainline. For example, the DH crank from Funn has chainline listed at 50mm or 57.5mm (presumably depending on whether chainring is mounted on outside or inside position). This would probably require a fair bit of respacing on a rear wheel, and wouldn't allow most flip-flop hubs.

Any thoughts?

That's one of the few parts i've never broken. Why not go the FGFS route for drivetrain if you want durability?

Downhill cranks will probably be 4 hole, 104mm BCD and come with a 32t or there-abouts chainring. That and the chainline numbers you've already mentioned make them not too suitable for a road style fixie. Would work OK for SS\FG MTB.

104mm BDC limits your choice of chainrings, particularly in the higher tooth counts.

The largest chainring offered in the model you posted is 44T.

I realize there's a lot more value to integrated crank/BB in the downhill and MTB world (where you can land from high up and have a much greater chance of snapping a square-taper BB spindle than in any kind of road situation).

You can get 42t or 44t rings for 104mm 4-arm bcd, and I run a 42x16 on my road singlespeed (though ran a larger gear when I had it setup as a fixie)

edit: rex615, you beat me to it.
