Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

bring them tires down to the island, well tear em up in no time!

IME, manhattans streets are actually quite clean as far as poky stabby things in the streets go

I'm about to get a set of those tires for my Rovals. They're really soft tires, but they look so good.

In Manhattan, anything in the actual roadway gets embedded into the pavement pretty quickly. Brings back memories... I remember seeing sets of keys, silverware and belt buckles perfectly crushed and embedded smoothly as if it was part of the pavement.

Long Island was another story. I got double flats on my way to work from a carbide circular saw blade laying in an intersection. Street sign poles, pieces of chain link fence...

Here in the south its mostly dead animals. Lotta dead snakes. Mostly Copperheads.

I was wondering about Leeg's Open Corsa tires too. Would love to try a set.

They roll fast and smooth. On good pavement with a wind at your back, they feel incredible -- just effortless forward motion. It would be hard going back to a tire with higher rolling resistance. Certainly, I won't cheap out on tires ever again now that I know what a really good tire is like.

I have Grand Bois tires on another bike and those are really good also.

I had Grand Bois Cypres Extra Legers (700x32s) on my Ridley and my god, they roll so smooth. Like riding on clouds. Unfortunately, they're also extremely fragile, and I had to retire them early due to a cut on the sidewall.

My Pista used to wear Veloflex Masters and those were also very supple.

Here's an incredibly crappy pic of my bike that I took with my cages. These pedals are grippy as hell.

New addition to the stable.
Aside from the obvious car trunk duties, it also makes a serviceable Townie. Shown here sporting the sexy new "Trashcan" panier.

SS 'cross set up in wet weather commuter mode.

Fortunately though, we've had plenty of dry days for fall.

Nice! Very all-purpose looking. Been trying to turn my only bike into something similar.

Unfortunately, I have room for bigger tires (700x35/37) or fenders, not both.

Do it! Function over form can be absolutely joyous.

The bike began as a bone stock Nashbar SSCX, replaced most of the bits on it:

Deda RHM01 w/ Specialized Roubaix tape
TRP RRL levers.
TRP CX9 mini-Vs
SRAM S300 / 39t ring / GXP BB
M520s
45c Specialized Fatboys
SKS Chromoplastic 50mm w/scratchmade mudflap
Specialized Henge Sport saddle
no-name stem/seat post & clamp
Stock wheelset w/17t freewheel.

Most of the parts were either laying around or scrounged from other rides. The frameset, wheelset, and headset are the only stock bits left on it I believe.

The current ratio is a little odd feeling. Not low enough for proper off-roading, not high enough for a fast cruising speed unless I spin at ~100rpm.

You could probably make something work, especially if you've got track/horizontal dropouts. Even 32c w/fenders would be pretty comfortable.

Heck, in order for me to fit in the massive tires, I needed to have the rear wheel as far back as I could get it in the rear dropouts.
