Mayor Announces Bike Summit
Wow that accident broke more than the mayor's elbow. Looks like it broke the mayor's indifference toward cyclists.
Sent from my sister's boss...Well actually Austin Buetner is her boss but everyone knows he's running the city.
MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES AUGUST 16 BIKE SUMMIT
Town Hall meeting is an opportunity for dialogue on enforcement,
infrastructure, and related issues.
LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa today announced that he
will convene a Bike Summit from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. on August 16, 2010 in
the Board Room of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, One Gateway
Plaza, Los Angeles 90012. The Bike Summit will provide an opportunity
for cyclists to talk directly with the Mayor and representatives of key
departments and agencies about improving conditions for cycling in Los
Angeles.
“Let’s get together and talk about what we need to do to make the
streets safer for cyclists,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “Whether you
depend on your bike for commuting or just take it out for fun, I invite
you to come to the Bike Summit to talk about your experiences and learn
about what we’re doing in Los Angeles to make streets safer for
everyone.”
Topics for discussion at the Summit include: the City’s draft
Bicycle Plan which would build over 1600 miles of bikeways including 200
miles in the next five years; LAPD enforcement of laws governing safe
driving and cycling; Metro’s effort to integrate cycling in the
region’s rail and bus network; and other infrastructure and
enforcement related topics.
Mayor Villaraigosa first announced his plans for the Bike Summit in
July.

Hi,
I want to get to this meeting without driving and by using my bike for part of the trip. Looking at the Metro web site, I cannot bring my bike on a Blue Line train from 6:30a-8:30a. Does anyone know if this restriction is enforced? Kind of ironic that I can't bring my bike to the meeting using public transportation.

I hear it's hardly ever enforced.
Everyone come early. From what I'm hearing it's going to be a big turnout for 9 am on a Monday.

It is not enforced nor is paying. If I can make it, I too, will be there.

Hi,
Unfortunately, it looks like work priorities are going to overcome my ability to attend. I will be watching this space for news of what happens.

Priorities:
1) Education - The majority of people in LA (including many city employees) do not know that a bike belongs on the road. We need classes, we need signage, and we need paint on the road.
2) Appropriate use of resources - Spending 90% of our money on separated bike paths at the expense of safer streets is like building freeways that lead to gravel roads. People don't need a freeway unless they can reach a destination from the off-ramp. Using that money on the street would go 10x further in terms of getting people around safely.
3) Enforcement - 1 in 5 car on bike collisions is a hit and run. Of those none end in a jail sentence or even a lost license unless the criminal is very dumb and very unlucky. Jail is reserved for killers, the worst offenders who kill, injure, are drunk and leave the scene get 4 years max with no access to guns on probation but full driving privileges.
We need statewide reform of hit and run laws, until then we need the city to start taking these crimes very seriously. Leaving the scene is a breach of the basic responsibility of a driver and they have no business on the road if they can't stop for an accident.

I clicked on this thread thinking that Beanz had called some kind of a bike summit, whatever that could be, only to find the mayor referenced by the title of the thread is Villaraigosa, that great legal scholar. From what I read, he doesn't spend much time on city business, so he probably has a lot of time to ride.

Has everyone submitted votes on the Villaraigosa Bike Summit questions?
https://www.google.com/moderator/#16/e=26e51
I, personally, would encourage people to favor the questions that task the mayor with specific actions and projects that have stated timelines. This will mean that the city is committed to accomplishing the goals, and accountable if they're not realized.
See you tomorrow morning!

Hi,
You can find an article on the summit here:
https://laist.com/2010/08/16/bike_summit_notes.php
I definitely like the proposed law that would require motorists to have at least 3 feet between their car and the cyclist when they pass a cyclist.

California cyclists desperately need a package of "vulnerable user laws" including 3 feet to pass, as defense against distracted, careless or aggressive drivers...

Hi,
I want to get to this meeting without driving and by using my bike for part of the trip. Looking at the Metro web site, I cannot bring my bike on a Blue Line train from 6:30a-8:30a. Does anyone know if this restriction is enforced? Kind of ironic that I can't bring my bike to the meeting using public transportation.
