I tried it twice last year and had a lot of fun. I'll probably do it again twice this year too. I'll be one of the 2 or 3 dudes on a mountain bike in beginners race at Costa Mesa.
Most fun per $$$ I've ever gotten from a bike related event.

Where in Costa Mesa is the 9/30 event? Fairview Park? I'd like to spectate this year at least. Cross racing looks fun & doable for even such a candyass as I.

*Bumping*.
Fairview Park is right off SART between Adams & Hamilton. Look for the footbridge across the river. I'll be spectating on my '96 Specialized Ground Control

Well, I had fun as usual. What a neat little event. Mushing through all the grass on 2" wide mountain bike tires really takes its toll, but I think they worked nicely for the sandy section.
What shocks me is my average HR was 179 for the entire 30 minute race, and I peaked at 186bpm during the finishing sprint. Highest I've ever seen on my normal training is maybe 173. Wow.

I stayed until about 12:00. What were you riding? The weather was not optimum to put it nicely. Impressive diversity of bikes & riders. Kinda hoped the course would have gone up & down the bluffs at the West end of the park, but I can imagine laying out a course in a public park has it's challenges.
I'll definitely be spectating at the Irvine event.

I was on a white specialized 29er and I think my race was 11:30 to noon. The weather seemed utterly fantastic to me. The west side of the course was a bit mountain bike-ish...very fun, although I would have liked more hills too. Climbs aren't really a cx thing it seems.
I have no idea how I placed. I start towards the back and just pass throughout the race watching how others take their lines. I ate it on a tight single track corner in the dust and have some nice bruises today. Maybe I worked up to mid-field.

I'm still waiting to see how I did from last week. Sure takes a while to get chip-timed results up!
With ciclavia this weekend next to the CX course, I'm tempted to stay away. Too many people in one place.
