Newport Beach Memorial Ride, for Sarah Leaf & Kit Campion-Ritz

In honor of Sarah Leaf and Dr. Kit Campion-Ritz, there's a memorial ride on Sunday, October 28, 8:00 AM at the new Whole Foods market in Fashion Island. Please help spread the word!

The city will match donations for the Bike Safety Improvement Fund 3:1 (Wow!), with about $11,000 donated so far.

Lets make this ride the biggest ride OC has ever seen. We have all read how John and Jane Q public think we are a bunch of dressed up law breaking grass eating lane hogging idiots. They throw trash at us, coins, and spit. A favorite is to see how close and how fast they can get to us on the road. General public needs to see that we are mostly law abiding, health seeking individuals out for a good happy time on our workouts. Just like any group there are a few that make a bad name for the rest of us. We need to call them out and let them know they are just perpetuating a stereotype that hurts us all. We shall ride legal and be respectful. We should let everybody know how huge a force we can be. There should be thousands out to stand up for our fallen friends. Please make this a priority, I will. When it comes down to it I like riding with all you out there. I like the nod, I like the groups that fall together and ride, only to split up and go our separate ways. I love the wind in my face and the chance to see the world at a pace that allows you to experience it in a way that most just never see. Lets ride in peace and remember our friends with due respect as we seek to make our lifestyle safer and maybe more understood by everyone else.

Spit? Never had that happen. But again, sometimes I spit and it gets on my sleeve.

Unfortunately, that is not the law in California. What do Jerry Brown and Rick Perry have in common? They are the only two governors to veto 3 foot passing laws. Brown has now vetoed it TWICE.

The Importance of Contributing to the Fund

Getting this back on track, even if you don't actually do the memorial ride, you can still make a tax deductible contribution via the o.p.'s link. A $25 contribution will result in $100 being applied to bicycle access improvements primarily on PCH through Newport Beach. Plus, the bigger the participation, presumeably the more seriously the City of Newport Beach will take the political power of cyclists. Please pass this on to your friends and ride mates.

How long of a ride is it? I ride from Riverside to Newport and want to ride this in support. So how far is the ride and where does it end?

It's a single 1.1 mile loop around Fashion Island at a slow pace.

There is talk of a ride to Sunset Beach and back but nothing official yet. After the memorial ride there are endless bike paths and trails from this area. This should be a day to poke around the Newport area and see what you like. Bike friendly and make us proud. NewpOClavia...

This I might be up for. Not crazy about coming out from Riverside to do a 1.1 miler. I love the ride to Newport from here and love the area, but...

You can get a tshirt if you donate $15+ or a wristband for $2+. Pickup is at surf city HB or CM or at the event itself.

Or you can make a straight donation.
