Anyone know the conditions of GMR with all this rain and sub freezing temperatures?

Not personally but some friends rode up GMR on Sunday and said it was cold but no snow on the roads. They just went up to the shed so things could be very different by the time you get on GRR but at least GMR was okay.

They said it was low 40 deg.F so yes, cold, but ride-able! It's supposed to be warmer by this coming weekend.

Didn't look like baldy had much snow at all on it this morning, so I'd guess it's fine all the way to the lifts by now.

We rode GMR/GRR Sunday to about mile 18 or 19 from the gate and it was clear and very quiet (one skateboarder, 4 or 5 motorcycles, lots of hunters and a game warden keeping an eye on them). Once we got past the GRR/GMR split the road was wet in places and there was a small amount of ice here and there, but nothing that posed much of a safety issue. It was crazy cold on the descent - my Garmin read 36 degrees when we were near the water tower (around mile 13). Bring your booties and balaclava.

A few friends and I are planning a GMR/GRR ride from Glendora to Mt. Baldy Village this Sunday Dec. 15 and all the SoCal bikeforums.net riders are welcome to join us.

We'll be clicking-in at 8:00AM from Boulder Springs Road in Glendora, expecting low 50's Deg.F at the start. As noted by jimxyz above, bring your booties and balaclava! A wool base layer might be good too . . .

Overall should be cool but not frigid with the usual warming on the climbs and cooling on the descents. Some riders may be starting from Encanto and taking Sierra Madre up to Boulder Springs to meet us; my understanding is that they're leaving from Encanto at 7:30AM.

Hope to see you on the mountain!

Cool, I was actually getting the info for a car club drive on Saturday at 11:30 (350z/370z). I was planning on riding Lytle Creek on Sunday but I may join you now. I am still yet to ride over 45 miles and have not attempted GMR on my compact. Should be fun none the less. I will make sure I get there plenty before 8, last time you guys left like 5 mins early.

Hi Lesper4,

Okay, this time we will not leave until 8:00AM. Sorry about that last time! Yes, you will really appreciate your compact on GMR/GRR.

Works for me!

I hope to join the Sunday ride - depends on how much kids stuff I can get done Saturday... I usually start at Grand and Foothill (Starbucks) and ride over via Sierra Madre, I find that it gives me a slight warm up before the misery begins. Drink your coffee slow at the lodge so I can catch up to the group, haha

Yes, well, depending on how your triple was geared. I went from a Shimano Ultegra Triple with a low gear of 30 x 27 to a SRAM compact with a low gear of 34 x 32 so yes, the compact gave me lower gears; esp. appreciated on the Ski Lift Climb, Decker off PCH, Descending off Oak Canyon and other double digit % climbs.

jimxyz: I hope to join the Sunday ride -
Hope to see you other there, somewhere on the mountain!

if I can get my noodle-legged fat ass up GMR on a double (34/28) then you can too! I make no claims about ski lifts or other daunting slopes, and that "descending" road Rick is talking about had me walking. 13% is about the max I can stand (the backside of Cannon seems to be mostly 13% for about a mile)

The only thing between me making it to this ride tomorrow is a holiday party tonight. Must not drink booze or stay out late... Weather should be perfect. Hope to get to the lodge before everyone is heading back - I've got a black Felt, white helmet.

I know this question has been repeated ad infinitum but what is currently the best place to park for GMR? The high school? Encanto Park? I am coming from Pasadena.

Encanto works, as does the High School. We park at Boulder Springs, or you can park on lower GMR, just don't block any driveways or park near fire plugs. Further up on GMR requires an Adventure Pass.

I should be to Boulder Springs by 7:45 at the latest. I'll be on a Titanium GT and wearing an OCRR jersey. My car is a dark green Miata with a tan top.

Lesper4 did make it and rode very well indeed! Practically perfect day on the mountain with Anne, Cary, Maria, Lauren, Linda, Kim and myself.

Lots of other riders on the mountain too!

How is the road up to the lifts? Has the chip seal been sealed in yet?

The chip seal is exactly the same as AC. Rough but rideable

Was definitely rideable. The headwind made me take an hour to go 4 miles =)
