I just looked and I can't find any updates newer than April - the rider was 21 yr old Joseph Robinson and the drunk 18 yr old was Sommer N. Gonzales.

Your google-fu is strong. Where'd you find all that? Frankly, pleading not guilty is her right... I didn't know "denied" was a legitimate claim though. Since she was effectively caught red handed on at least some of those charges, I reckon it won't go well for her. Hope springs eternal.

By the way I rode up Santiago Canyon this morning. Temps were good but it was a little muggy.

Anyway, I passed Joseph Robinson's ghost bike right at 8:10 am on a Sunday morning, which spooked me a little bit. I didn't realize that was where he got hit- there's a chain link fence right behind the guard rail (to which his ghost bike is attached... it looks like somebody is taking nice care of it). Tons of room on the road right there, tons of visibility (Obviously February might be a bit different, sunrise was at about 7 am whereas it was 5:30 or so this morning)

Made me a little sad and jumpy all at the same time.

Unless there are facts that we don't know about, I hope the DA doesn't strike a plea deal that will leave us all wondering what our lives are worth while out on the road. The sentence for gross vehicular manslaughter is 4, 6 or 10 years. I think the flight from the scene adds 5 years. The rest of the charges don't look like they will add much time. Maybe a criminal atty can weigh in - but it sure seems like a joke given what we know about the circumstances...

You can bet a lot of us will be keeping an eye on this case.

A plea deal? NO!! It sickens me to think that's a possibility unless really serious jail time is involved.

Well, if we're lucky somebody with actual experience in the DA world can chime in and fill in the blanks, but from what I've learned over the years, it's a different mindset. I don't think you should lose your life over one mistake but in this case, we have a series of mistakes that lead to a very bad outcome for one individual and anybody who was tied to him. Drunk driving, illegal drugs, hit and run, a death.....

Before we sharpen the pitchforks let's let the legal system do it's thing but DAs are political animals and it's probably important to reinforce that there are people who care very deeply about car on bike violence.

Update: There was some type of Pre Trial today and it was heard. The preliminary hearing for September has been cancelled (again) till October.

We will be riding to Joey's memorial "Ghost Bike" on Santiago Canyon to raise awareness that we are here & that we all need to SHARE the road.

The city allows Ghost Bikes to be placed on the anniversary of a cyclist death and to remain for 60 days.

Thank you all for honoring the life of this young man and fellow cyclist today.

My family and I passed by the accident site around 8:30 the day it happened last year. Without knowing for sure, I got a sick feeling that something terrible had happened to a cyclist. An internet search later confirmed my sad suspicions. Only passing the site occasionally, the ghost bike always caused me to pause and reflect. By coincidence, I happened to pass the site yesterday around 8:30 and noticed the bike was gone and came here to see if there was any reason given (city rules) as well as check on the trial progress.

I sincerely hope the perpetrator faces the fullest consequence for her selfish, foolish, irresponsible act. Fortunately, I found this thread to track that progress. Please keep it going.

The bike came down quite some time ago because of the law. The bike should be up though, we put it up last Monday and it's aloud to stay up 60 days on the anniversary.

I think there was supposed to be an arraignment on Feb 3 - maybe tunavic can work his google-fu magic again and figure it out. The OC courts website is opaque to me.

BikingLA had a write up on 2/2 that fills in some of the details about that day, and although I think we know generally what happened, it's still disgusting.

This hit and run happened over a year ago in my area. In this case the drunk driver crossed the center divider and hit Phillip Richards head on. Hopefully he'll received a stiff sentence

Good lord, how many times do they have to drag that wretched woman to court before they try her? I sincerely hope she's waiting this out in jail and not at home.

As for the Calimesa man - I have become jaded when I see things like "up to 15 years to life." That's like Geico's up to 15% or more. 0% is included in up to 15% or more, of course.
