Boy, did my stoker surprise me tonight!
I told Kath that I was going to sign up to do the Death Ride this year after taking off about six years of doing it. She said, let's do it on the tandem. I tried my best to talk her out of it but she would have none of it. I'll personally be happy if we get three passes in but she wants it all! I love that woman. Now, all we need to do is get registered. That may be harder to do than actually ride the darn thing! :-O

Don't mince words
Good for you! Good luck with that!
We've done some challenging rides on the tandem, and are committed to the Solvang Double Century this March...but we've avoided rides with "Death" in the title. If there was a "hat's off" smiley I'd use it for you.
And I your stoker. A woman after my own heart.

Geez, I just checked and found they already did the Registration, and it is closed! When did that happen? Registration was in February last year.
It matters not so much I guess, as Craigslist has tons of registrations available as the ride gets closer.
I would like to do it as well, but Mrs. Ritterview will need sedation to cope with the Monitor Pass descents.
Edit:
Registration day December 10th. Never saw it coming.

In Cycle California is says there is a second registration date, 1/7/10 at 10 am for 1800 riders. I just sent them an email. We'll see. Maybe we aren't doing it.

I do not think they have a second registration day this year as they had in 2009. For the 2010 DR it was a one day event sometimes in mid December.
As mentioned above Craigslist is the place to find entries in the 3-4 weeks before the event. Most sell at full price but a few can be had at super discounts.
I am impressed by your stoker. Tackling the DR on a tandem is very gutsy but should be a lot of fun.
I see a lot of Diablo climbs for you in the coming months.

"Hi Dan:
We only had one registration process for the 2010 event. We had a misprint on our
ad - we apologize for any inconvenience. Other ways to get in:
become a sponsor, volunteer to ride, enter a training camp at Kirkwood.
You can also post a message on our message board. We had over
600 riders transfer their entries last year. You can also check ebay
and craigslist. Local bike shops and bike clubs also will post entries
for riders looking to transfer their spots. We do release no show spots
on Friday night but this isn't a guarantee. We have been able to
accommodate everyone who have wanted to ride in previous years.
Thank you for your interest.
Death Ride Staff"

It's the whole package: location, course, difficulty, riding crowd, cheering crowd, support, lots of fun characters, rolling skeleton, quest for the right to sign the poster and wear the finisher jersey, occasional afternoon storm (even hail), starting the ride in the dark in the very early morning, cresting Monitor Pass in synch with the rising sun, the cramps, the car free roads, and more...

Marleeville Death Ride?! I'm impressed! I am in the Northeast, but I have a few friends that have survived the experiance. When I hear about a ride containing the word "death" in the name, I think of The Bataan Death March!

Well, if you are in the Northeast and want to experience the best of cycling in the West, the Death Ride is a pretty good bet as a destination ride. There are a fair number of out-of-staters riding it. The sunrise descent from Monitor into the Owens Valley isn't something you'd soon forget.
