2010 Cannondale RT 2 tandem

Hi guys and girls.

Who can help me. Sombebody is offering me a new Cannondale 2010 RT 2 M?S tandem in Europe. The tandem has FSA cranks but still the old 105 STI levers with the shiftercables going "the old fashion way", not next to the handlebar.
I got 2 2010 models with the new model shifters and I used to have the 2009 model with the old shifters.
Is this guy not telling me the truth and trying to sell me a 2010 model which is a 2009 model?
I don't know the seatpostsize yet, 27.2 or 31.6 mm, this might be an indication too

Who can help me?

They changed frame design in 2009. If it is a 2009 or later frame the Captains seatpost should be 31.6mm and 27.2mm for the stoker. The 2010 RT2s I have seen have all had disc brakes front and back and Ultegra 6700 brifters.

Hi Dean

It's for sure a model starting from 2009. It's a white RT 2 but in Europe mounted with 105 parts.
If I'm right the only difference between a 2009 and 2010 is the seatpostsize and the old/new model shifters but I'm not sure about this.
For the rest is has the Avid BB7 brakes, FSA cranks etc.

After they went to the new frame in 2009 there were no subsequent frame changes. It should have the larger front seat post, rectangular section seat stays, sort of square section boom tube, and some hydro forming on the top and diagonal tube as well. They have an integrated headset too. If it doesn't have a frame like this it is 2008 or older.
Here is a pic of our 2009 M/S. The frame should look like this except with a "Fatty" fork.

Yep, looks like it but I still don't know if a 2009 or 2010. Reeceived a photo, see below. What kind of fork are you using?

Can you get the serial number that is stamped on the bottom of the frame?

Yes, I can once I got it home. I bought it from the photo's since it's a couple miles away.
Can we check ourselves by serialnumber? I expect the bike within 2 weeks

Definitely a 2009 or later frame. What difference does it make if it is 2009 or 2010? The frames are the same and the componentry is what it is. Obviously not worth as much as a bike with 6700 Ultegra Brifters, but in saying that I actually find the older style to be more comfortable.
Hard to tell from the pic but if the front seat post is 27.2mm it could have a sleeve on it to make it fit.
The forks on my bike are Reynolds Ouzo Tandem forks.

Got the serialnumber: U010014
A 2010 has got the newer shifters, those are easier to sell and you don't got the cables outside anymore.
I'm from Holland, would like to get some new/old stock Cannondale RT 2's or MTB from the USA with Ultegra but at the end it will be to expensive unfortunately.
You don't know any somewhere? If I know someone who can help.....
Transport I can get for free but the bikes should be "used" on paper.

I am not positive, but I think the serial no. indicates a 2009 model (U=2009) the next 5 digits would indicate that it was built on 10/01 and the "4" is the unit number. If you go to the Vintage Cannondale site you will see that the catalog for 2009 shows the bike with Ultegra brifters and shifters. I can't account for the difference in yours unless a slightly different model was produced for the European market, or the dealer changed out the Ultegras. I did not check the European catalogs.

At any rate the frames from 2009 thru 2012 are identical. My LBS told me that Cannondale built a whole warehouse of these frames just prior to shifting bike manufacture to Asia. Bikes purchased in 2009,2010,2011,2012 are from this stock.

Captain's seatpost should be 31.6 and stoker's 27.2.

That black RT2 looks boss! Then with regards to your tandem, it's clearly an 09 - 12 frame. Since it came with 105 bifters, it's got to be an 09. Since you want a Ultegra set, check out this sale in my neck of the woods.

Thanks for all the info guys, great!!!
I'll first wait and see what I'll get.

In Europe, all the RT 2 models (after 2006 if I'm right) came with 105 bifters (=shifters?), 105 frontderailleur and 105 chain. Only the rear derailleur is Ultegra.
I guess it's just to keep the price a bit down.
I'm sometimes selling tandems in Europe, Cannondale is one of the favorites here but if new models are coming in 2012-2013 then I better not buy them anymore. I saw a thread saying 2013 tandems are coming, I wonder.
Thanks for the RT2 M/S. Might contact this guy and might need your help again but who knows for sure 2013 models are coming?

Hi guys

Now you really have to explain something.I have been looking at the 2012 M/S Captain Haddock send me, at least the link.
But, this one got the old model bifters too. I got a 2010 model L/S and X/S with the cables inside. In the USA they don't use the new models yet? What's the location of this bike? is it close to a (international) harbour? Attached my X/S 2010

I just noticed that they're calling it a '12 model, it's got to be an '09. I think they just copy / pasted from the cannondale site. I have a '12 and it's with the newer ultegra bifters. It's located in Hood River, Oregon. closest port city is Portland, Oregon.

OK guys--This time I checked out the UK/European catalog for 2009. The bike is a 2009 model made in October. STI 105 was standard for that model that year. In the US Ultegra was standard for all RT2 2009-2012.

thanks all of you for the info.
it's to much work to get a used 2009 model all the way to europe and still get it for a reasonble price at the end so I think I have to blow this off.
thanks anyway for all your help. I appreciate.
Wish I was living there because it's hard to find pilots here...
