Handlebar Bag == Ow, My Wrists!

Hi folks,

I recently added an Arkel small handlebar bag on my bike. Regardless if the load is heavy or very light, it seems like my hands are suddenly taking a real beating. Previously manageable road surfaces seem to slam into my hands really hard.

Is this a known phenomenon? I'm thinking seriously of returning the bag and using a small front platform rack with a cheap bag instead. Is there some other way to ameliorate the worsening of road vibration?

Did you somehow change the position of your bars/brakes/grips/etc. when mounting the bag?

I've always felt that the rigid way these bags mount will transmit vibrations into the handlebars. Putting a lot of weight out in front of the bars on a solid mount might be your problem, do your wrists feel bettre if you pack less?

Do you have a long stem on your bike? One solution is to add a second stem to your bike to hang the bag on thus taking the vibration out of your handlebars.

I've never noticed any wrist discomfort related to my handlebar bag whether empty or overloaded. Ideally you should have your hands resting lightly on the bars with fingers relaxed and loosely draped over the bar. Elbows should be bent, never locked. This should all be true whether you like your bars low like a road racer or higher for a more upright position.
