Went touring this weekend on my single speed 1985 Trek 420. 44x18 gearing worked out to be perfect for the trip...Florida, so the only real hills were a couple of steep bridges, though we did get into some rolling hills about 50 miles out so that was a lot of fun. I'll upload a better pic once I sort through my camera, here's a cell phone pic for now.

I got to use my Topeak Bikamper tent too which works well as long as the weather stays above 40 degrees or so

I forgot to share this months back in August!

I did my first century over a route I've done twice over two days. 228km in just under 12 hours. I went for a light bike packing, bivvy set up with no stove. Gotta love sandwiches for tea!

More snaps to be found on my blog, amongst my other adventures, here!

Touring rig for warm weather

My rig on coastal Maui, August 2013. It was tropical weather and plenty of places to buy food, so I packed light. I have an ultralight tent and camping gear that I can fit into one of the panniers.

Thanks! They're 700x43 'cross tires. I'm digging the traction, but with 70psi I'm not sold on the roughness. Fast on pavement, too stiff on the trail. Need something with a bit more cush-factor.

Very nice set-up. I like your fenders. Can you tell me who makes these?

70psi is a lot for 43mm tires, have you tried lower pressures for the front?

I really like this Terry. I also like the drops with bar end shifters. I got my Ogre last summer and have its first loaded trip getting planned for a combo of the Prairie Spirit Trail in Kansas and the Katy in MO next summer. I went with the stock tires that came with Ogre and it is a nice ride of forest service dirt roads, a little spongy on the pavement when I use it for my commute but a fun ride either way. I'll post a pic when I get it loaded up. It will be a different feel thatn my LHT loaded I am sure! Good touch with the Yellow bar tape to match your panniers

Sorry but I just saw this. The fenders are Planet Bike. They couldn't take much bigger tires than the 700x37 WTB pictured. I just picked up SKS 50 Longboards that should work with the Conti 42s I plan to use this year

Well just to give you guys and gals a good laugh...

Here's my first "touring" bike

I ran that cheap bike all over Florida. I've camped, toured, and had an absolute blast on that stupid bike. I was pretty inspired by Fred Birchmore and decided to 'just do it'. Well, I did it. After a couple years, it prompted me to buy this bike:

And that's the bike I'm riding today (Novara Safari). I'll definitely take the easier route from now on, but don't let anyone tell you that you need a touring bike to tour. Just a bike and the ability to keep pedaling.

Although.....

THIS was a common occurrence on the old bike:

That's me sadly approaching an old railroad bridge near the end of the Withlacoochie bike trail in Florida knowing full well it'll be a long walk up.

It might not have been ideal, but nobody had more fun than I did!

The Trip That Ended Prematurely

'92 Specialized Hardrock
W/ a B.O.B. Yak

Gear
(Not using full racks and panniers, (un)coupled with the ease of dropping the trailer, made for a few impromptu single-track shreds.

Granite City, Illinois

Litchfield, Illinois

Columbus, Ohio

Gambier, Ohio

Howard, Ohio

Mt. Vernon, Ohio

I took quite a few pics on this tour.....
Not many of them included my ride.
Next time.
Definitely.
