Happy Time In Thailand
If you are offended by touring reports which are not politically correct then this one is not for you, otherwise you might want to click through to Happy Time in Thailand for a laugh.
To give you a taste ...

Andrew
To give you a taste ...
As I spun my way over the last few kilometres to Phetchabun, the traffic started to become more built up, and with it the appearance of more houses and small workshops on the side of the road. Out of one mechanic’s workshop raced a mangy Thai dog, intent on having a piece of either me or my fixie. There are two standard techniques of avoiding a dog bite in Thailand, either jam on those pedals for all your worth and leave him behind, or stop suddenly and stare him down with the bike in between the two of you. On this occassion I decided to try a third technique – coax the bastard onto the road. I quickly looked over my shoulder and noticed a large truck coming up in the kerbside lane. By holding my speed constant I was able to keep the mutt just behind my back wheel, the clicking of his nails against the roadside beating out a steady rhythm. As the truck came nearer I darted across in front of it into the farside lane, eliciting a blast on the horn from the driver, shortly followed by the yelp of a dog going under the front wheels of a lorry. Darwin wins again.

I just skipped through your link, (yes, American ADD I suppose.), but do not understand your point. Are you planning a ride in Thailand? A friend of mine is over there teaching, His impression is that Cambodia is the undiscovered touring land. His messages to me about Thailand are a bit negative unfortunately.

Hilarious! I have an acquaintance ( I won't call him a friend) who goes to Thailand every winter to bike tour, each day ending with a massage. Or possibly, a "massage." Ick.
I have another friend (an actual friend) who I think is destined to become one of those sad European guys married to a prostitute and supporting a whole town, even though he's American and claims to be very happy.
Anyway, thanks for sharing! I would love to find a journal of a woman touring in Thailand some time, to see if there's anything to recommend it for those not looking for a happy ending.

^ valygrl. I certainly hope there is more to Thailand than what your post indicates. I have friend who spent extended periods of time in Thailand on a couple of occasions, and she loved it!

Every lane is a bike lane
Hmmm, maybe a bike tour in Thailand sounds like a better idea than I thought.

Seriously, I would be interested to hear this perspective - I know there has to be more than sex-tourism, but I do hear an awful lot about that.

While sex-tourism exists, and is much more out in the open than almost anywhere else in the world, there is much, much more to the country than just sex-tourism. If you go seeking out that sort of thing, you'll find it. If you go looking for adventure, white sandy beaches, jungle resorts, incredible culture, great food, overwhelmingly kind people .... etc... you'll find that.
We spent August - October 2011 on Koh Samui in one of these cottages.

you know how sometimes you just cant turn away from looking at a car wreck on the highway, this was like that.
I now feel dirty.

We've lived in Thailand for months at a time on several occasions over the past few years and have toured there as well. The country and people are absolutely magnificent. Wide-shouldered roads and good inexpensive hotels in most small towns makes Thailand ideal for touring.

the off-colour-kilter take on it I can appreciate in the way I appreciated the original UK shows by Sacha Cohen (not the film, but his UK segments) but in the end, if this is a true recounting (which I doubt btw) it ultimately comes down to the sad truth of sex tourism.

I didn't find the sex tourism bits of the story nearly as off-putting as the ongoing description of daily bowel dysfunction.

i am "one of those sad euro guys with a thai girl" what a load of crap, just a weak stereotype to play up too. the thai community where i live is fully of successfully marriages and very few divorces, a lot better than my UK counterparts!! a little bit of a rant but it get my back up when i read or hear this drivel. of course this is always some truth to these account but let me tell you it the minority not the majority.
also the style of writing is very arrogant and missed the true delight of the people & country for crude anal gags and so on, a bit immature really.

A little edgy but I laughed a few times. A little poetic licence I'm sure but I doubt much was fabricated. How about some details on the bamboo bike?
"The Canadians were easy to spot because they had Canadian flags sewn to all of their possessions.* Why do they do that?"
They were probably Americans incognito.
