Comfortable commuter/Tour bicycle on the cheap

Comfortable commuter/Tour bicycle on the cheap
My girlfriend wants to tour with me! Whoopdee! but she needs a bike that isnt going to fall apart. I've repaired the one she currently rides numerous times but the components are shot and its at that point where I want to sell it for $200 or so and get her a new bike (for more than 200.. maybe $700 all together.) Her new bike doesnt need to have any special touring geometery, but a comfortable commuter with a few touring components is necessary.
What should I do?
Get her the new KHS bike from River City Bikes with drops, bar end shifters, 24speed casset (no fenders or rack) needs a few adjustments like different stem roughly $750

Yeah, if it fits(Fit is First,)might be the one. For a more relaxed ride, I usually recommend the Trek FX 7.2 as a compromise commuting/touring ride for a reasonable price.

Actually we went to look at it yesterday. It does fit her. It would need a bit of love though. Bottom Bracket is a bit loose. Read derailur might have to be changed sooner than later. Needs new griptape and then a few shiney new brake and shifter cables.
Its a 720 Multitrack from the 90s. cromoly.
Does anybody know about the wheels she talks about? Vittoria tired Alesa wheels.

The Trek 720 is a hybrid from the 1990's converted to drop bar/bar end shifters. When new it sold for around $370. While it would probably do the job you can probably do better. I am selling a "brand new" (just took it out of the original box last year, and have only ridden it a couple of times) 1993, Trek 820, large frame, for $250. River City will set you up right.

20% of Rei branded touring bikes will be coming next month I think. That might be something to consider? Great return/warranty policy comes along with it.
Novara Safari is $899 before the 20% off.
Not a drop bar but would do a nice job... they have other choices as well but all for a little more money.

I've been looking on PDX Craigslist for a bike for a friend. There are bikes in the $400 range that are a much better for the price. This a small frame Kona with disc brakes that I have been looking at.
