I'm personally glad you went with the trekking bars.

The number of hand positions and mounting points for shifters is essentially limitless and you can save money by avoiding brifters, which I've never been a fan of on a touring bike. A randonneuring bike perhaps, but not a touring bike.

@douglascdglon I already ordered some trekking bars, I expect them to arrive at the LBS later today. I'll be picking em' up later when they get there. thanks for the suggest

@saddlesores I already got my headset and such installed at the LBS too, bit late for that. thanks anyways. Turned out not to cost to much either (about $30ish) thanks for showing my that though

@acidfast Actually, I plan on getting twist shifters (shram to be specific) that's my prefference anyways.

since then, I've rotated the bars flatter, since I'm using open palm relaxed
hands, 'grip' on the sides, more..

just short of a BB7 conversion , but I have found the Magura Rim Brakes the Best of Type.
so a slow change.. [an even older bike wears the studded tires, at the ready]

[since the Bike Friday with them fitted gets more use,
Its functionally, a step thru frame, it's easier to get on/off

Dang! looks like I won't be getting those bars till tomorrow. They are at the shop, they just need to check em' in (still) and they'll be closing in less than a half hour.

That's an excellent KM.

I agree with the Magura Rim brakes ... the HS-33 hydraulics are hugely popular in Germany. Probably so that everyone can use their old frames.

draig, One issue I had with twist shifters was inadvertantly shifting them on my mountain bike, something very unlikely on a tourer. I do like the extra lateral hand room they provide vs. trigger shifters. A good choice for your build.

Well, I got the bars this morning and got em' one (along with my barends.) as I think it's fun to post updates anyways. here's a side view of what I've got on my build thus far
Next thing to get will be the rims (front one is gonna at least be ordered from my LBS in a couple days)

Thanks! from my LBS they were just over 32 usd acidfast ^^ When I get a bit of extra $ I'm gonna also be in the market for bar tape. about to do some research into that here and around the web (perhaps also looking at CGOAB now that it's back up)

Build update, I got my front wheel and put a deposit on the rear. the front is a Shimano hub with an Alexrims rim. 36 spoke 3X lacing. I don't know about the spokes though. I expect to be able to pay off the rear one next week.

Also, Jandd is having their end of year sale! so I'll be orderring the mini mountain panns and their extreme front rack ^^ (prolly around Friday). I'll be posting a pic after I get the wheelset set up (tires, tubes, ect.)

You might ask around re. Jandd front rack and how it fits on your frame, I tried mounting one on a couple bikes and the top back portion hits the down tube if the bars are rotated to the side. Other frame manufacturers appear to address the problem with a different shape there.

I talked to someone at Jandd and did a measurement of my fork (and eyeballed it) and it looks like it'll fit on there without hitting that bottom tube. If not, it's not like I'm out any extra anyways. it will be gotten with the Golden ticket

I finally got all the stuff for my wheels (minus the tires) turns out the tires I got right now will have to go to freecycle though. they don't seat well on the rims X( I also recently got a Jandd extreme front rack and mini mountain panns ^^ suffice it to say here's my most recent pic of my build

draig, I usually at your point of the build double check what I want for the drivetrain. With mine I had three cranksets in the bin to choose from, but following the advice from this forum went with the 22-32-44 and haven't regreted it. I still may try the 28-38-48 just because it's there.

I couldn't really find a 22-32-44 in my price range, so will be getting the 22-32-42. plus I don't think they make an alivio with a 44 chainring. I couldn't find one anyways.

OMG! my friend is AWESOME! He just picked up from the LBS my belated birthday and early xmas present! It consists of almost my entire shopping list (all I need to get now are the tires, mirrors, saddle, seat post QR, crankset and chain!) Looks like I maybe done later this month! or early next. But as i said my last post, I'll have to wait till after christmas to post more pics as I still don't know what I'm getting from my sister (I know it'll be bike related though)

you realize if the chainrings are not riveted on , you can change them, right?
